Like the title says, I bought this knife for $6 at a garage sale. I saw a post about a knife that looks just like mine. The one I bought doesn't appear to be very old. The sheath looks like new. There is some rust around the handle of the knife. It says original bowie knife on the blade. It also says EDGE BRAND SOLINGEN, Germany at the bottom of one side of the blade and 445 on the other side of the blade. I'm posting a picture. Can anyone give me any info on the knife?

Basically, these were imported into to the US around the 50's/60's. Germany pumped out many different blades at that time. Good find!

So it really is 50+ years old? It must have been taken care of pretty well. The sheath looks brand new. The blade is still very shiny. Is there something I can do to get the rust off the bottom of the handle without destroying the value? Also, how much would this knife be worth to a collector? I'm not really interested in selling it, just curious.

Nice find! However...

Be careful about asking for a value of a knife without a gold membership even if you don't intend to sell it.

You could take some rust remover to it. Local hardware stores usually carry it. Also, you're not allowed to ask about value, but I will tell you these knives are very common. But for six bucks, you got your moneys worth for sure.

looks like the little bowie i bought as a kid on vacation with my grandparents in the mid 60`s. i dont know where it is now, she took it from me at the time and i didnt get it back until close to 30 years later when i found it helping to move her out of her house. just brought this up in another thread not long ago, kinda weird to see what could be the same knife so soon after that post.

I have had one like that since 1968 that my Dad gave me. I ran around in the woods with it, pretending I was Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone.

My wife made me go to some garage sales with her. (not my favorite way to spen a saturday morning) It was an older gentleman that I bought it from in north San Antonio. He had several other bowie knives but they didn't look as cool as this one.
