6 blade stockman...

Was just looking at some new colts. Didn't buy anything, but they have a six blade stockman pattern. Why? A four blade Congress is even a lot of blades. I carry one a lot, don't get me wrong, but...

Six? I don't get it. Why sacrifice the thickness/weight? Anyone got any good reasons?

At least all the blades are different...

But yeah, I'm with you on this one. The only congress I have so far is a 3.5" Steel Warrior, which I bought because the blade selection is the same as Case's, with 4 different blades. I love the variety, but couldn't see needing any more, except perhaps for a hawkbill/pruning blade, but the coping blade is close enough. Any larger, and that'd just be way too much knife, at least for me. The Colt (which looks to be the same manufacture as the Rough Rider) is 3 7/8" and 4 backsprings wide. That's a brick in your pocket, and frankly, despite being different blade shapes, the usefulness of some are fairly redundant. A spay blade and a pen blade? Large clip and small clip? Small clip and pen blade? Large clip and spear point? The only one with a true uniqueness is the sheepsfoot. I've made no secret of my dislike of redundancy in blades, even though I understand the appeal of duplicate blades so you can go longer between sharpenings. The apparent appeal of having 6 different blades is choice and variety for the perfect blade for the specific task at hand. But on this particular knife, apart from the sheepsfoot, there's nothing that one blade on this knife does far better than at least one other.

Honestly, if I were to choose any number of blades from the 6 on the Colt/RR, I would chose the large clip, the pen, and the sheepsfoot, and no more. And that'd just be a regular 3 blade stockman.

Just my opinion.

I agree. Three blades in a knife are plenty for me. But, being an RR fan i bought their 6 blade Stockman in Gunstock jigged bone. It is THE Best Made RR to date. half sunk joints, all 6 blades have excellent spine/spring alignment, very smooth walk & talk and 6 different scary sharp blades to play with. I was so impressed i bought another, just as excellent, so i bought another and another.
Then i saw the Colt in black smooth bone and for sure it is the same knife, so i bought one of those too and will now go back and get a Stag handled one.
I posted pics of 2 of the RRs in one of the RR threads to show the excellent fit.
Definitely not a pocket carry for me, except in cargo style pants, but would carry well in a belt sheath.
If you like RRs or the Colts, get one of these 6 blade Stock knives (recommend the "Gunstock Bone"). Even if you won't use it, it's worth the $15-$20 just to hold and admire.

Hi,

I don't feel a 6 bladed anything is very comfortable for my pocket.:) A 4 bladed Congress is enough for me. Otherwise I just get confused.:)

I think RR and Colt and other slip-joint makers do 6 blades more to show off their skills and because they can. Rather than as an attempt to make something real practical. Though judging by some of the SAK's that get carried for EDC, maybe there is a market for them.

I don't understand them either but my friend collects 6 bladed stockman. I always knew he was a weirdo. :D

I think 3 blades are a plenty. He doesn't EDC any of them, just buying them and displays them.

One word answer...novelty, I love my 6 blades stockmans if they made a 20 bladed stockman I could afford I would buy it...

I once saw a six blade knife that I would gladly put in my pocket...

That Bose is definitely a beauty. And a useful, varied array of blades to chose from.

Reminds me of a song...

THe RR 6 blade is really well fitted, so if those 'guys' can do it, no reason Case employees couldn't do a fine job of a 6 blade Stock knife as well. Likely the base price would be $450+, so sales might suffer.

Aside from maybe the beautiful Bose that's posted, I don't know that I would have a whole lot of interest in a six-blade stockman. The size and weight would be a pain and I really wouldn't have use for all of the other blades.

I remember when I was a kid my father bought me the biggest SAK that I could find, problem was that it was too heavy and bulky, I think I would feel the same way about a six-blade stockman.

I would like to hear the song. Why doesn't it play? It is knife related. It has been removed for some reason. J

It kind of reminds me of one of those big SAKs. You need a belt pouch for them or it's like having a brick in your pocket.
