I'm living up in the mountains of NC now, about to be up here completely permanently soon. In the twilight hour, I came across a new record today

6 different mammal species on the 4 mile stretch between my residence and the fiancée. Now normally this isn't anything out of the norm, but then I sat back and ran the numbers through my mind:

4 deer (no shocker there)
7 rabbits (most wee little guys)
1 skunk (honked to get him to move his rear)
1 ground hog (almost as funny as a duck when they run)
1 squirrel (nuts)
1 opossum

all in a less than 10 minute car ride. Everything was normal to see except for that possum. He was out early!

Not in the numbers of seven or even four deer at once...but the list sounds like the natural inhabitants of my back yard.

This should mean there are some good wildlife shots coming in the future..., right?

Love it, don't ya'!?!
We live in Vermont, about a mile from the center of town, and in the past year we have had in our back yard...a fisher cat, about 10 different deer, hawks, rabbits, mice and moles, a black bear, a moose and a perfect bald eagle.
I have the view to the west towards the Adirondak Mountains and the sunset every evening, and...I'm lovin' it too.
Enjoy and pass some a long.

Hey Joe, you could have gotten out of the car thrown a machete at each of them and still had thirty machete's to spare:D

a few minutes ago there were six deer (additional to the others) in the backyard. And I noted how the hatchet in my hand would make a good "rabbit stick"

Thanks!

I lived in Raleigh, NC. Though not the mountains, the number of deer in place i lived at in the back 40 rivaled the deer up here.

Yeah, there are often more deer per acre in the "burbs, but they taste like tar!

you should wrestle one of those deer down and cut him up with one of those machetes you've got.

I love seeing wildlife - there's something very peaceful about it.

I will be posting a pic up of the new cabin once I am finished with the darn painting ! pronto joe pronto! There are bear around here, one messed up the mulch pile a week ago, but I'm more afraid of the skunks messing around with the bees then that darn Ursa. I moved the hive into the cow pasture so that the other entomo-chomping mammals have to dodge an electric fence first....maybe the cows will gang up on 'em too.

The trout pond is 20 yards away from the door through the woods, the New River, 50 yards. The UPS guy has to make a 1/3 mile drive to get up to my door from the main dirt road. I need to figure out something for him!

Nice. I've been seeing a lot of turkey around. Actually saw a hen with about 4-5 chicks with her, this morning in the driveway.

UPS make him a friend a Few adult Bev. a Mailbox in town.
Flatland Deer would be more in number as more food available than in the hills

Here I was thinking this was a continuation of Machete thread. I did see a deer on my way in to work tonight. Good thing I was going slow on the dirt road and going around a curve. I always see Doe and never any Buck. I wonder why that is?

Me too. I stopped to let a hen and chicks cross the road in front of me on Thursday. Glad to see them coming back around they have been scarce for quite awhile
