I like the idea of carrying around a 6" Nicholson mill bastard file for random sharpening and rebeveling, but am unsure of a carry method. I wear dickies that have a lot of other stuff in the pockets, and anything that's next to the file is sure to get messed up by it. any sheath that requires the file to be slipped into it will eventually get torn to shreds, because your literally filing down the sheath every time you put the file back.

so ideally, a thin hinged plastic sheath that could be opened and closed to insert the file would be best (no filing action), or perhaps a fairly loose leather sheath that's roughly the profile of the file that wouldn't be too tight on it that would be pocketable would work.

do you know of any such sheaths that could be used or modified to work? would I just have to make a leather sheath?

something like this

I would think that a simple kydex sheath would work great. Small, thin and simple. It would protect all else around it. Plus kydex is cheap. 5 or 6 dollars for a square foot.
That is the smallest and best protection I can think of.

I made one, but it ran into the problem of the kydex being filed down every time you remove and put the file back. any design utilizing kydex would have to open up allowing remova and replace ment of the file without any friction.

within 10 draws, the file eats away enough kydex to make it completely loose and rattly :(
