Let the "Whittling Quest" begin!

Here's one that was sold around 2002 and I believe it was through Wal Mart but I'm not sure about that. It has everything you need: oil, stone, knife, storage tin, instruction manual and even some Schrade-approved whittlin' wood (really a small chunk of 2x2 lol).

The knife that comes with it is a 834UH Rancher which is a very nice but small 3 5/16" closed knife. The packaging dwarfs it! This kit is a honking 13"w x 11 1/2"h x 1 3/4" thick.

Some of the statements about whittling being really popular again (in 2002) and how it is a great alternative to video games kinda brings a tear to my eye. I think xbox sold more than these kits but you can't blame Schrade for trying.

I include scans of the entire booklet and of the knife for prosperity. Enjoy!

p.s. Who is going to be the first one here to make the suggested ball-in-cage project? I think I gotta make one though I'm not sure why...

Great job showcasing that item. It is too bad all the outstanding posts like this on Schrades can't be archived somewhere, like Larry V's site. I guess it's a matter of harvesting them in emails that are too large, getting permission, bandwidth for storage, and time to organize and display them correctly. We need to buy Larry a winning lottery ticket, so he has the time to increase the size of collectors of schrades r us by a factor of 1000. Thanks, Dave!

i guess i can't start whittling, cause i don't have an 834UH. darn. will have to start looking for one.
but really that is one great post thanks for taking the time and sharing with us.

Thanks guys! I do my best :). As far as the archiving goes I kinda figure they are already archived here at BladeForums and Larry has a link to this forum on his site so if you find one you will likely find the other. I always put the official name of the knife in my thread titles and I'm not going to delete the photos so an easy title search will pull these threads up for future Schrade collectors and veterans alike.

BladeForums has lots of very knowledgeable members, more info than can be measured and Bernard Levine to boot. It is a great site and I can't see Spark shutting it down any time soon. After a year and a half I finally stepped up to "Gold Member" and while the pms and avatar etc are great it was mainly to support this great site and see it continue.
