Wondered what anyone using a 6" wide belt grinder thought of it compared to using a 2" wide belt. I have never used a 6" belt machine.

Have a chance to buy a very large, industrial, multi-hp., 6" wide belt grinder and thought it would be just the ticket for flats and would save a bunch of time over a 2". This one is set up with a flat platen and no work rest.

A work rest could be made for profile work but think for profiles the only real gain being straight portions. Is anyone using a work rest for flat grinding blades?

Any opinions or insight would be appreciated.

some have good success with 6x48". i like the 2x72 because you can get a vast array of diff, belts. like ceramics ,norax etc. with the 6" you seem to be limited to a/o and s/c. not to mention diff, size wheels that i use for profileing.

This beast uses a 132" belt. Probably have to have them made so I would assume they could be made of any abrasive. The machine is taller than me, @ 6'high, with the belt running vertical only.

Go for it. The great Lloyd Hale at least used to use a 6X48 to flat grind his big bowies, and they were, well, absolutely awesome. I fully expect to move to a 6" belt for flat grinding one day soon myself. I'd love to find a machine like you describe, I'd be in hog heaven!

J.P.Moss, a knifemaker in Texas, uses a modified 6x48" grinder for his knives. Does a great job on them also.
I can't see why a 132" version would do any less.

On a couple of ocassions in my job as a delivery driver I have delivered to auto-glass shops and it seems like alot of them have big (about 6ft tall) grinders that they use for profile work. Mostly they seem to be wet belt grinders with a tak of H2O that th belt runs through. I am personally keeping an eye and an ear open for a shop that is going out of buisness to try to pick one up Hope this helps............

I have a Wilton 6X48 and it is a hoss! I primarily use it to square things us and to taper tangs. This thing is so powerful that I can really bear down with enough pressure to move the machine and the belt doesn't slow down a bit! One other little trick...you can run a 2X48 belt on it for the finer grits.
