My daughter landed 3 nice alligator gar on the trinity river, all of them were around 50 pounds, this was one of her gar she landed that day. The Music is BassNectar Magical World one of her favorites :)

That's very cool.:) Those are some gnarly looking fish. Had to of been very fun for you both. Thanks for the video.

Looks like a really great time. Those things are hard to hook too from what I understand. Let her know we all say congrats!

i have figured out what need to happen to hook them pretty well

i made this little video showing my leader and bait..

i have found if you use somewhat small chunks of the carp/buffalo(gar crack) the gar swallow them pretty quickly (i really like the head chunk)..basically when you get a run, you open the bail or go to freespool and let the gar run(usually they go down stream) the bigger gar tend to take more line, they will find a spot they like and stop and eat the bait, before they stop they are almost impossible to hook because the bait is lightly held in the armored jaws(feels kinda like metal) they stops for a few seconds(depends on how big the gar is and how big the bait is) after they start moving again you can get a hook in them..bronze treble hooks are best so you can cut the leader if you need to...J hooks tend to hurt the fish..

basically let them run, wait for them to stop..set the hook when the start moving again..

waiting for them to move again after they stop is the most stressful part for me..sometimes they just drop the bait..and sometimes you hook a monster..i have lost a few over 100 pounds so far..my biggest was around 80 pounds..

That's great! We mostly have longnose gar around here, the alligator gar are protected. Y'all eat them?

no, many people do, and claim they taste very good
for me they are the same as tarpon or arapaima, all fish who have survived since the cretaceous period..a 100 pound gar is likely two or three time older than i am
i am pretty much a catch and release fisherman these days, bait is about the only animal i kill these days..
my kiddo and i are headed back to the same spot tomorrow, got a few carp for bait and the gear loaded up already..
