When sending stuff to Mr. Bos does the entire order have to be the same type of steel or can it be a mixture of two or more types.
Thanks
Mark

No, you can mix them. Just make sure that it is all stuff that Paul does.
You will like the job he does, IMO, he's the best.

How do you mark your blades to distinguish them later when it's time for assembly? Also, what is the procedure for sending your stuff to Paul? Do you have to individually wrap them or what?

Peter, Paul usually asks that you wrap the blades in layers of newspaper. Make sure to clean them thoroughly first, and dont touch them after, with your bare hands. Wrap in reasonable stacks of 5-10 blades each, make sure to have paper between each blade. Wrap the paper over the ends and tape them.
Mark your blades with your initials, and the type of steel, on the handle/tang, using a vibra tek machine, not sure if that is the right name for those vibrating carbide tipped things that you write on metal with. Mine is called an electric pencil engraver.
It would help to enclose a note, with a short inventory, like the number of blades, return address etc.
Good luck to you, you will like Pauls work.:)

MJHKNIVES, I don't make many stainless, knives, so far have been useing Texas Knife Makers supply.

Where can I find info on sending blades to Paul Bos? Prices, shipping times, ect?

Thanks

Last post I read about Paul was $10 per blade up to six blades and the next 14 were free.Or $60 for twenty blades.Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Mark

Will, here is his home and shop #s.hm=619-445-4740, shop=619-562-2370.
It would be a good idea to call and ask him which steel he does/does not do. I know he does some non stainless, air hardening steels, like D2,just not positive, and don't want to give bad info.

Thanks MJHKNIVES, It'll be awhile befor I grind anymore stainless, just sent a batch off last week. I will definatly look him up, I'm tired of dealing with TKS.

Paul has a slight upcharge for mixed steel batches, not much but can't recall what it is. He also has an upcharge for knives something longer than 10", again can't recall the exact length, still not much. I've managed to hit them both. His minimum may have recently gone up, I just got a batch back and the min on the ticket was $70. Still a great deal.

Can you believe he still writes hand tickets and sends a bill after he's sent the blades back? He's a pleasure to do business with.

paul is great to work with. turn around is about 10 to 14 weeks and i get the up charges mentioned. my bill is about $80 for for around 14 blades. i send ats-34/154cm and bg-42 which can be batched together. list it with return and billing info for him. i put 5 chops, 5 skinners 5 chef etc,

Paul does all air-hardening steels only. On blades above 10" there is a modest surcharge - I forget what. HT includes cryo. On mixing and matching, I don't think that is always true. ATS-34, 154CM and BG42 use the same cycles so they can be mixed, but if you mix in something like A2, D2 or 440C it will change. Check first.

Bottom line, Paul treats your blade like they were his own. Great guy, great service, great quality.

Its $60 for up to 20 blades same steel, $70 for mixed steel. Not sure what the extra size surcharge is. Indiv blades are $12.50 each, plus return shipping. I usually include a note with that blades, how many per steel, rockwell, etc. Then I usually Trace or scan the blades and include that so he can match them up. I also include around $10 or $15 extra for the return shipping. Oh, and don't send him peanuts or the foam popcorn for packing. thats a big no no :) Turn around time is pretty quick, and the blades are great!

NO FOAM PEANUTS..........or you will be toast.
The guy is really a cranky old man......I have no idea how he stays in business!!!!

Thanks to every one but Mayo, You are off the team! As of Jan. 1ST my min. price has gone up to $70.00, that will do up to 20 blades. One to five blades is $14.00 per blade. ATS, 154, BG-42, 440-C Etc. can be run at $70.00 min. When you mix tool stls. such as D-2, A2 Etc. with st. stls. it is a $80.00 min. Any blades over 10" there is a .50 cents an inch add. charge for each blade over 10". there is a $2.50 handling charge per package, plus return postage. Turn around time is 5 working days in my shop. Wrap aprox. 5 blades to a bundle in news papper, put a note in package with your name, address, Ph#, type of materal, R\C hardness, etc. As you can see im not to good at typing stuff,I would be glad to talk to you on the phone, You can call me any night after 5:00 PM. P.S.T. during the week @ (619)-445-4740, If no answer leave PH.# and i will call you back. Thank you Paul.

paul, im gonna email you. Looks like i will have 5 154-cm blades, 3 A2 blades, 1 14" blade, 23" OAL A2 short sword, 6 S30V pieces. 2 of the S30V pieces are 8" blade, 12.5" OAL approx. Lol. I think this covers just about all the scenarios you listed in one order! :) I just gotta see if i can actually get all of this stuff cut and ground out by friday :)
