Looking to get my buddy his first knife. If I head my choice I'd go with a higher end spyderco, but I don't know how well he treats his knives. He's seen my paramilitary 2, Benchmade griptilian, and my crk sebenza 21 to name a few and liked them all. I will be splitting the bill with somebody but don't know many of the "lower" end knives on the market (I say lower end in quotes because even at their priceopoint, many of them today are quality. Not so when I first got in). I've considered the kershaw emerson cqc6 and the spyderco tenacious (which I've bought a few for people and honestly, if I didn't already own similar higher up spyderco knives, I'd rock one. Duplicates drive me crazy). What do you all recommend? Name brand knives, none of those weird ones with the "axis" lock, etc. Single blade, liner or frame lock, g10 preferable but I'm open to other suggestions. Blade under 4".

You can get him a Kershaw Blur for right around $60. Assisted, though, so maybe not what he would want. Good knives, though. Check http://kershawguy.com/ for options. He's a BF member dealer and good guy to deal with.

Something from the Kizer Vanguard series would offer high value in that price range or maybe a Kershaw Link (although it has aluminum scales)...s30v Blurs can be had for $70 as well if you look around a bit. Good luck in your search.

Kershaw shallot, leek, blur,or the skyline. either will be a good choice. check out dave Anderson the Kershaw guy, he always has good prices and a you get a Kershaw that is real.

Kershaw has many styles of knives for under $60. I've several; some linerlocks, some assisted. All are good knives. Also I'd recommend CRKT knives and of course Rough Riders and Colts. All good.

The correct answer is Ontario Rat 1 in D2 steel!

Knife Works is getting a large shipment any day, you may want to get on the list now.

US Made Kershaw knives are all solid

Real Steel knives are fantastic for the money (better quality than some US products)

If he can swing $80 there isn't a better value right now than the S35vn Kershaw Link from House of Blades

Kershaw Link 1776.

Made in USA, top shelf warranty, in a steel that is easy to maintain and sharpen.

Checks all the boxes.

Ontario Rat 1 for a larger knife, but the kershaw Skyline gets my vote for a great low-cost, made in US EDC knife!

Another vote for Kershaw Blur. The 14c28n steel is easy to maintain but still very durable edge holding. Colors and styles are plentiful too!

I agree with the above recommendations although I would recommend CRKT with an asterisk. They produce some decent stuff, but I feel like their materials are generally not inline with their MSRPs. If you can find them pretty cheap, I'd say it's an option although if not, I'd say you can probably find better value elsewhere.

The best made, best finished, best material knives for under $60 are currently the various offerings from RealSteel.

The E775 Griffin is a sweet knife with a great button lock. My only complaint would be the aluminum grip can be a little slippery.

The H6 Blue Sheep is their flagship knife. It's a RAT1 killer, does everything the RAT does but better. I don't think anyone could recommend the RAT after handling the H6.

The H5 Gerfalcon or E771 Sea Eagle can scratch your frame lock flipper itch.

My personal favorite is the H6-S1. Available in ply CF or G10 scales with REMOVABLE thumb studs...unheard of at this price point.

The H9 Takin covers the Wharny shape blade crowd.
There's a lot of new ones coming out that look great too. A lot that are currently out of stock. That should tell you something. All of these knives are less than $60. If you know where to look, you might find them for half of $60.

Try one out. You won't be disappointed for the price.

Reading this post just costed me $80

I'd throw in the Sea Eagle too...smoothest non-assisted flipper I've ever felt!

The Boker Trance is a solid performer in the price range, despite the corrosion-prone bead blast finish. Recommend replacement of the plastic washers with phosphor bronze, which cured off-centering and lateral play that developed after years of EDC.

+1 Real Steel
Even higher quality than my Spydercos or Benchmade!
Going to get a Sea Eagle for myself next.
