600 grit stone from the Wicked Edge package creating a different edge?

So I have had my Wicked Edge Knife for about a year now. I have never used my 600 grit stone that much. I always finished my knives with 400 grit, then stropped them on leather with black compound. I used my 600 grit stones maybe 3 times including today. Affter finishing with the 600 grit stones, I looked at my edge, and noticed it created a 2nd bevel on one side. Like both angles were 20/20 on each side. This angle after using the 600 grit was like a 25* on this one side. So I was like "maybe I am using to much pressure", but this wouldn't make since, If I was using a lot of pressure then the opposite side of the knife would have one big bure. Right? So I went back over with the 400 grit stones, the knife is back to normal on this one side. Went back to this one side of the knife with a 600 grit, but lightly ;)

Sure enough, it still created a 2nd bevel. So I switched guide arms. Maybe it was the guide arms. Nope. Still did it. Ok now the stones. Sure enough, it was one of the stones that came with the package.

What is causing this? One of the 600 grit stones doesn't do this, but the other one does. May I add, these are the 400/600 grit diamond stones that come with the sharpener when you purchase the basic package.

I contacted Wicked Edge as of today and waiting for reply and hoping for a replacement. I will post back if they send me a replacement so others can know if they ever run into this problem like mine, then a replacement can be sent.

I bet it's not mounted even in the paddle... Its probably slanted.

can you take pictures for us of what it's doing? its kinda hard to visualize...

This has happened to me , not with the Wicked Edge, with a Gatco . My diamond hones are all fine but the fine ceramic is a little thicker and therefore creates a different contact with the edge. It is very easy to see using the sharpie trick. When using a new hone for the first time I compare the thickness to my others and use the sharpie then lightly touch the hone/stone to the edge to confirm it is ok.

i wish that was the case. i tried it on 3 other knives and it did the same thing. i could understand this more if it these blades were full flat ground but they aren't.

If I understand correctly, I'm pretty sure he's (razor-edge-knives) talking about the mounting of the stone in the paddle being crooked, and not about the blade being crooked in the clamp. If it's the crooked mounting of the stone itself, then it'll do this on every blade you try. Makes perfect sense, if so.

Thanks OWE, you're exactly correct in what I was trying to say... thanks for clarifying

I did this with a sharpie. And you can see where the 600grit stone (the faulty one) creates a different bevel on the knifes edge. Basically if I had both sides set at 20 degrees, this stone will make one side look like it was brought up to a 25 degrees.

As in "paddle", are you referring to the little 2 prong key that use to set the knife at the 2 different depths?

The "paddle" is a term used for the complete "handle assembly", comprised of the two stones 600/400 the colored plastic mounting trays and black handle.

razor-edge is suggesting your 600 stone is not mounted correctly, possibly not flat in its colored tray and therefore not parallel to the tray, arm hole, or other sides stone.
The 600 stone in one paddle clould also be thicker on one end or simply thicker altogether than the other paddle.

A photo would help prove this.
Or simply look side-on at both paddles together, is one thicker anywhere?

Emails are always slow to get a response in my experience, I have two waiting for a reply now.
It would be great if they simply aknowledge receipt at least, as the reason given is usually that they are so busy.

I suggest you ring to add some urgency if needed, funnily enough I'm told they more likely have time to answer the phone.
Possibly emails are not favored?

As for WickedEdge replacing something faulty, they are one of the best out there.
Clay is a very nice guy and really does care about customer satisfaction, sometimes the path to it can be a bit slow. ;)

Questions get answered very quickly if you ask them on the Wicked Edge Forum. I'd not bother with an Email.

The trouble here is Clay needs to see the post, then he needs to pass it on to Kyle.

If you ring, you get Kyle. ;)

I think we have the fault finding covered here.
Describing it to Kyle will get the "quickest" response.

But your right, the forum is pretty active and advice is given fairly quickly, some great members there too.
Sometimes I think you get a biased opinion from some moderators about how common or bad a problem is though.
Curtis (cbwx34) and I clashed many times, Clay was always nice.

It is after all a place to help sell product.
Many members end up buying the choseras after a few visits. ;)

Careful you don't get banned for being too negative or critical, it happened to me.
I was banned for 48hours for one comment in a "gun control" thread (on a knife sharpening forum), then extended to life for being negative and posting here in the days that followed.
Then the thread was deleted, figure that one out?

Lol you must just be too controversial billabong!

Clay advised on the other forum that he and his team is very busy this and next week due to the 2013 Shot Show. He advised that they will still be operating on a skeleton crew and that emails and phones may get a little bit slower response requesting a little more patience :-) hope this helps.

Hi Josh, what do you mean, I think my comment was simply unpopular, the thread should never have been allowed to survive?
But one of the favoured members wanted to promote his cause.

Clay said next week, not this week, I would have thought if you are going away, you would clear the list before you go?
I think it's my desire for facts that get me in trouble.

Good luck whitefox, I would move on this today if I was you.

I had kyle responded to the 2nd email attempt, I am just waiting for his reply.
Even he said it might be a bad stone. I just wish I knew how this higher degree angle is caused by this stone.

*edit*

kyle is sending me a new stone out. i just have to send him the bad one back. hes sending a shipping label as well.

just got my new stones in the mail 2 days ago from kyle, and tried em out tonight. they work great. no 2nd bevel. even tested it with the marker.

kyle may take a little while to respond to your email, but he will get back to you.

Yes, Kyle does get things sorted when the email is read.
Took a while to get to mine also.

It's a shame WE don't seem to understand the importance of a quick response, this is an old problem that still haunts them.
Considering emails can be sorted via many device types in many locations. (even countries) ;)

Going to a knife show shouldn't mean the WE business sales and support machine is turned off for weeks?

I still scratch my head wondering why the full potential of this company is not exercised.
Often out of stock of certain items and poor communications and quality control, but great at customer support "after" the event.
Why they can't get it together?

The major components are made in China, the paddles/stones and ball-joint upgrade are made in the US.
Made In China on the box.

Do they simply not order enough of each, is the supply time not predictable?
I guess when Clay is confident the product is final and complete he might order in large quantities. ;)
