605 kit question

Hi guys

I'm currently in the middle of putting together one of the DDR 605 kits from Koval, and I have run into a problem where the screws that hold the liners together are too short. Anyone else have this problem?
I ended up stripping the originals out.

I ordered the extra screw kit, and those are the only screws that aren't included, so now I'm considering using 2-56 screws instead.

Has anyone else experienced any trouble with this kit, and if so, what exactly was the trouble?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I use a step drill for the scales and take the hole deep enough for the screws to just touch the inside of the liners. The small step drills are available from Kovals. They really help make the job easy.

I hope this helps.

The screws on my 605 don't quite go all the way through either, but Ti is so tough that a few threads will do. Mine hold just fine as they are. I assume the screws are what stripped and not the liners. I'm guessing the screws are 72s not 56s, but maybe you wanted to go oversize which I wouldn't do unless you could tap and countersink. If you don't want to wait for replacements which I'm sure they'd send you, you could check at Lowe's in the little plastic drawer section for cone head screws, and see if they'd fit. You could even get longer ones. They might not be torx head, but that wouldn't matter under your chosen handle material. DDR could advise you best, of course.

It is the screws that stripped out.

I'm going to redrill & tap the liners for a 2-56 screw. I have all the proper tools to do this with, so thats not going to be a problem. I am an experienced machinist after all. :)

Bob,
Just for clarification, I'm having the problems with attaching the liners together, NOT attaching the scales to the liners. All is ok on that.

Darrel,
I tried to get Koval to just send me a couple new screws, and they declined unless I wanted to pay the shipping (5 bucks). I already had to have them send me liner screws that were not in the original package. This, coupled with having to wait a month & a half for this kit made dealing with them very frustrating. I finally called them after about three weeks, and was told the kit was on backorder. Thanks for the update! I also told them that they should include the liner screws in future screw kits, and they said they would consider it.

Sounds like it will work. I understood that you were referring to the liner screws. I meant that if the head of the "Lowe's screw" holding the liners together wasn't as flush as Darrel's original, the insert material would hide it, if you relieved the underside a little. Sorry I didn't make it clearer. I prefer the beefy 56s myself.
I didn't know you were a machinist, but now that I do, what's your opinion of Harbor Freight's $1600 knee mill--okay for the home hobbyist? Thanks, and thanks for the motor/wiring info too.

Two Bobs here, didn't notice at first.

Code3,

Sorry for the confusion. I have ordered the extra screw kit from Knife Kits and it has come in handy to replace screws that have been sanded on the scales and lost screws.

I'm not familiar with Harbor Freight's mill, so I can't comment on it.

If you are interested in a decent knee mill that won't cost a bunch, look at the one ENCO has. I personally use a Lagun Republic full size mill, and someday I'll replace it with an actual Bridgeport brand mill.

I redrilled the liners on the 605, and tapped for 2-56 screws. It worked out perfectly, and the knife has been in my pocket since Saturday. Nice knife!

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions.
