I think in Virginia that your CCW will let you carry otherwise restricted knives. If not, I recommend you look at the Cold Steel Peacekeeper, either with a 5-inch or 7-inch blade. Both are doubled bladed. I suggest you also consider a folder and take a look at the Cold Steel Voyager or Vaquero in 6-inch serrated blades, or the Gunsite in a 5-inch.

The CS Voyager, Recon Tanto and Peacekeeper. All
large knives.

At least from my perspective, a tanto would not fall into either of those categories, neither would a khukuri or a machete.

Once a fixed blade gets to be 6-7" in length, it's hard not to say it's not a bowie or dirk/dagger. I think Hondo.3's advice (tanto, khukuri, or machete) or Confederate's advice on getting a large folder would work better.

Maybe a Gerber Silver trident with a Kydex sheath?

Very nice handle and not too heavy. The double guard might get in the way though.

No double edged blades jtc.

Try contacting some makers in the "knifemakers for sale area" under "fixed blades". Email a few makers and tell them what you are looking for. Mykulmorris makes knives out of nicholson files and might be able to do something for ya. I've been looking at his stuff and 3-4 inch blade runs about $ 65-75ish.

NOTE: I have NO connection to mykulmorris other then I love his work and I can afford many of his offerings. I appreciate ALL the makers who post here but most are out of my price range.

nomadic, living in VA we both know the laws are very vague, and as you mentioned written in the law is the term "bowie knife". A lot of tactical fixed blades might resemble a bowie to an uninformed LEO, and the decision as to how to handle the situation is solely up to him/her. Also, the discretion is also up to the LEO as to whether you are trying to "disguise the weapon's true nature"

§ 18.2-308. Personal protection; carrying concealed weapons; when lawful to carry.

A. If any person carries about his person, hidden from common observation, (i) any pistol, revolver, or other weapon designed or intended to propel a missile of any kind by action of an explosion of any combustible material; (ii) any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, machete, razor, slingshot, spring stick, metal knucks, or blackjack; (iii) any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a manner as to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as a nun chahka, nun chuck, nunchaku, shuriken, or fighting chain; (iv) any disc, of whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades which is designed to be thrown or propelled and which may be known as a throwing star or oriental dart; or (v) any weapon of like kind as those enumerated in this subsection, he shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. A second violation of this section or a conviction under this section subsequent to any conviction under any substantially similar ordinance of any county, city, or town shall be punishable as a Class 6 felony, and a third or subsequent such violation shall be punishable as a Class 5 felony. For the purpose of this section, a weapon shall be deemed to be hidden from common observation when it is observable but is of such deceptive appearance as to disguise the weapon's true nature.

I think you are entering the gray area by looking for a "Good 6-7" Spear Point Combat Knife". You'd find it easier to explain a 4 or 5 inch bushcrafter.

Check out Dan Koster's sub forum here. He makes quality stuff, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. There have been a lot of very nice customs for sale in The Exchange recently, too.

Good luck on your search.

Good wisdom there. Admittedly, my tastes are bushcrafty. Whenever I think spearpoint blade, I think of JK-knives (goes by the name Stomper). He will make a knife to spec for you and his black mircata knives are very nice. The one pictured below is mine that I had made from him in 1095 carbon, 4.5" blade and 4.5" mircata handle. While lacking a guard, it can be argued to have some tactical appearance without overtly being so. This is his kephart model.

Not to beat this into the ground, but put yourself in the LEO's shoes...which would raise a red flag faster?
