Picked this old Gilpin axe up from that auction site.
Its a 1950's hatchet, ex-MOD, and, given those two facts, its in surprisingly good condition.
BEFORE
The bevel was an obtuse affair, which essentially rendered it blunt. I set to solving that on the belt grinder.
I didn't reshape the rather rounded profile, it was very hard feeling, and I couldn't afford the time to do it last night.
The axe was destined to my boss, he had asked for a kindling splitter for his wood stove, and I won't see him now for another two weeks.
AFTER
The head was a tad over 2lb's, and, I only had either a 14" or 18" handle.....I wanted to hang on to the 18" but in hindsight maybe it would have been better???
The 'customer' seemed okay with though, and if his 6'9", ex-powerlifting physique can't handle it its tough now!!
Here are a few more shoddy snaps....
Very pleasantly surprised by the high center line!
Thanks for looking
