I've for 65 bucks burning a whole in my pocket. I've been looking getting a cold steel recon 1, or american lawman. I have no needs necessarily right now so just looking for an enjoyment knife, and i like tough folders so was looking at these. Any other ideas??

Sounds like we're thinking the same way: the CS Recon 1 and American Lawman were the first knives I thought of when I saw your thread title. Both are very tough folders that you can have fun with/beat the crap out of.

Befor I even read the thread I was thinking recon 1. Thats what im buying next time I have some money to just throw at a knife. Like what your doing. Or grab a spyderco from the exchange

Consider the kershaw groove. Thick blade with a sturdy tip, heavy duty frame lock, and awesome flipper action. It looks cool and unique as well. There is a recurve, but its not too bad. Its definitely something nice in any collection, and can do real work as well.

I have an American Lawman and can give you my experience.

-The steel is much better than some on here would have you believe. I don't know if it's the heat treat or what, but it gets and keeps a really sharp edge.
- It isn't hard to open and close. I think some might be stiffer than others, but mine is fine.
- I have it in my EDC rotation with a Grip and an Endura as my primary three. I like it just as much as those two.

I consider a fun knife something I can play with while watching TV and flip it open and closed without paying much attention. Not sure what your definition would be. That said any knife with a Triad lock would not do well. The lock is quite stiff and has to be pressed in a long ways. The blade on mine never gets loose enough to flip freely as the lock bar rides on the tang adding friction. It is a strong lock but not very user friendly, for lack of a better term. My Lawman also had much poorer fit and finish than other knives costing half as much but maybe a just got a bad one.

For a fun knife I would get a Griptilian with the AXIS lock, a Kershaw RAM with its unique flipper and Hawk lock, or even the Kershaw OD-1 with its mechanical linkage flipper. All are great fun knives and should be available online in your price range.

The cold steel amercian Lawman is a fine knife for the money and AUS-8 when heat treated properly can be a fine blade steel with decent edge retention also the Triad-Lock is one of the best locks in the cutlery world right know.

I spent $65 on Cold Steel Hold Out and I agree with FlaMtnBkr about the Tr-Ad lock, It was so stiff I returned mine. For $65 you can get something decent, get a Spyderco, Kershaw, or Benchmade.

A fun knife to flip open and closed is the svord peasant knife. I assume you have a balisong already.

CS Recon 1 isn't hard to open or close, unless you're 4 or have advanced arthritis. It's worth the asking price for new and you can find them on the exchange for even less.

Yep, if you have problems with them, there's a company call Ironmind which makes a whole line of grip training equipment....

In all honesty, i got a Lawman awhile back and i am impressed with everything about it (the G-10 is probably a shade too grippy on the 'ol pocket, but it's sure not gonna slip out of hand either)...think i will get a Recon 1 next just to see what it's like or maybe an AK47. Maybe i'll try a mini version of one of these. The Lawman is a real great design and i have to say i think Cold Steel has come a long ways. I am a fan of the triad lock now after having this knife. I think you're on the right track man.
