Love this 663 in magnacut. Not a big fan of the taco. First,it is not compatible with my thicker belts. Second, my current backpacking gear doesn't have a whole lot of of molle or velcro in spots that are good for carrying a knife. Third and most displeasing, I am noticing light scratching on the blade from the plastic taco sheath. It is a user and a tool, but none of my other Buck fixed blades have this issue in their factory, plastic lined, leather sheaths.

Magnacut is not the wonder steel that everyone thinks. It has issues like any other “super steel”. There is still no wonder steel that is good for every occasion, just hype.

so far I've been impressed with it. hasnt micro chipped to death like s30v did when it came out. seems to hold a decent edge for awhile. easy to sharpen. corrosion resistance has been really good. I haven't tested toughness myself on a blade in it yet......but haven't seen anything showing it not as said. all in all for super steel hype and we've seen lots of it over the years on a lot of steels...this steel had been pretty good. time will tell as we see more results and data........

Not trying to be insulting or too simple-minded, but could it be marks from the kydex itself, and not actual scratches?

I wouldn't concern myself with a scratched blade because of the sheath.

At one time Buck made a really nice sheath for the limited edition chef knives they released.
They worked great, protecting the blade edge, and even had magnets to keep the knife secure.
But inevitably, folks complained about scratches on the knife from the magnets.
So much for that.😒

I vote for using the knife, and not concerning myself with the cosmetics.

Collected knives shouldn't be stored in a sheath anyways.

I would agree there could be a problem with the sheath not fitting a quality belt.
I'm thinking if you can afford to spend that much money on a knife, you probably have something other than a cheap thin belt.

I keep waiting for Buck to offer those with BCCI pricing.
....Along with many other things that are in the catalog that are yet to be on the website.

I really like my 112 too. I think it's just an issue with the sheath.

Yea.. it Is a user. And I wouldn't be so unhappy with normal wear and tear. But as is said, my other bucks in leather sheaths don't have this issue. I'm not so much making a stink, as I am making people aware. I will probably have custom leather sheath made for it again some point.

yeah I get that. plastics in sheath can create weird problems. the plastic or nylon or whatever is softer than steel, but the fiberglass in them, for strength, is not.

if nicked when knife is put in, and if it's used and carried it will be...will create a raised spot(s) that scratches the knife.

also any grit like sand or such can imbed in the frn types of plastics and also create the scratches.

I have this issue on a lot of plastic type sheaths, especially cold steel secure x. I haven't yet with Buck ones as they're usually kinda loose and have some space and rattle room. the alpha guide plastic is tight and holds the knife.

the infuriating part is if you didn't nick it and it's some sand or grit. I've gone crazy trying to remove the sand and found it's an exercise in futility. in the end I give up and just accept the scratches.

So the sheath is called a taco? Never heard that before.
used alot in kydex sheath talk. taco being one piece wrapped around the blade and one set of rivets. whereas the other method they call a pancake with two pieces and rivets on both sides.

think he's referring to the plastic insert in the sheath being more taco shaped.

Thanks for the explanation Jesse, much appreciated.

i do believe it is grit in the kydex, which should be expected to be existent in a knife used outdoors. Water isnt always around and sometimes cant be wasted... I think the scratches are to be expected, but unfortunate. A moot point to most people i guess.

delete repetitive post
I forgot the magnacut one comes with a different style and kydex sheath. It was stuck in my head it was the nylon and plastic insert version sheath. sorry I got all mixed up on that talking grit and cuts in frn and all. course grit happens to kydex too.....
