Just got the 665 this week. Great knife. I've been looking for a BM without the axis lock and I chose the assist over the auto.
The blade shape of the assist is more to my liking. The push buttons on the display model at the store were very smooth and mine are a little stiff but I imagine they'll break in with some use. I was going to order the CLA auto but Benchmade requires at least 12 models to be ordered at a time and it wasn't in stock at the store. The knife came flawless. Love the spine safety. The new boxes are also a nice touch.
Next on my list...What do you get next when you have all satin bladed Griptilian models? I'm going to get a plain edge 550hgbk and 551bk. You could say I'm going over to the "Dark Side".:D

I hate to break the news to you; but the 665 is an axis lock knife.
However, the good news is....I have one too and love the ease of the push button.
As you so eloquently put:
Great knife.
I couldn't agree more.
Here's a pic of the hidden axis....

Hey Keyman:

Thanks for the picture -- I haven't seen a disassembled 665 before (or fondled a whole one, for that matter). So, what is the mechanism that the push-button uses to actuate the axis lock?

Also, have you had a chance to disassemble a 6800? If so, does it operate an axis lock as well, or is it a straight push-button (as an AFO, for instance)?

Thanks!

I just picked up one of these yesterday at my local gun shop. I really had no interest in it when I first saw pictures of it but I really liked it after holding it and decided it would make a nice addition.

Take a look at this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1348056-Update!-Benchmade-665

With a lot of help from Keyman I deassisted mine and it is the best Benchmade I own now. It isn't even close really.

@keyman, making scales already? :) Can't wait to see them man!

This is one that would be sweet with something other than the blue/black scales. Would love to see an example of what Keyman is doing. :thumbup:

Only one 665 so far.
I've been so busy I haven't had anytime to MOD my own!?
Though I do have a few ideas :stupid:

I have not had a 6800 apart yet.
However, I do believe it is the same mechanism with a few minor alterations made to accommodate the auto function.
APB = Axis Push Button
Or how about ?
ETA = Easier Than Axis?
:D

That looks great Keyman.

And folks, this is no joke. The APB is easier to manipulate than the axis lock.

Thanks for the pics, Keyman. Your positive perception has me intrigued. The only thing I am not feeling is the blue/black.

The blue/black isn't bad. However, I mostly don't like it because for me, it seems a bit too slick. I do think this is a knife that is worthy of some upgraded scales. Keyman's scales above would probably make this one of my favorite Benchmade EDCs in a long time.

I don't think it looks super bad or anything. I just don't prefer blue/black and I have a couple already as a result of Knifeworks' default exclusive coloration. Smooth G10 is actually something that I really enjoy, though. Black G10 would probably suit me best. I know: boring :D
