67-72 110's

That switch came some time during the middle or last quarter of 72 the 3 liners. It was noticed by Vern Taylor and the discussion started. DM

The 1st and 2nd Version knives had a horizontal stamp. The 1st and 2nd Variations of the 3rd Version were an inverted one-line stamp, then the 3rd through 9th Variations of the 3rd Version were inverted two-line stamps, as were the two variations of the 4th Version and the 1st Variation of the 5th Version. The 2nd Variation of the 5th Version was an inverted three-line stamp and then with the 5th Version 3rd Variation, in about 1973-1974, the three-line stamp, not inverted, began.

Is the blade on all 67-72 110's "inverted" in today's terms??

Yep, and there's even one that's inverted and stamped on the wrong side of the blade in today's terms.

That looks like the last variation (#9) of the 3rd Version knives.

Yes, many years ago I believe it was a #7, but things changed in the list as others were added or discarded or both.

I think there's another list besides Joe's and that causes some confusion in the numbers, too. The 110s are complicated, that's for sure.
:)

George Stinzel has a different scheme for classification with completely different numbers. Sometimes we forget that the classification numbers and even the assigned dates have nothing to do with Buck; they have been developed after the fact by collectors in an attempt to describe the changes over the years. Buck did not say, "We will call this Version 3, Variation6." They just made the knives.

Thanks Bert! Although a little confusing I understand what you said. I appreciate your knowledge.
Thank You!!

I know this was talked about in another thread. I have a 67-72 110 with original sheath as you can guess the leather need's a little TLC. I was thinking about soaking it in Neatsfoot Oil?? Any suggestions out there??

Skidmore's Leather Cream is a good product that is beeswax based. I have used both their leather and wood finish products. They are now based in Port Townsend, Washington and you can order online. Vince and Susan have been my friends for many years.

I assume the "Federal" is a replica of the original 110 Hunter.I read somewhere that these were made by hand, since the tooling used to make the original 110 Hunter had been disassembled many years ago.

Here are a few pictures that may give members an idea of the scale and size of the original 110 Hunter compared to the two dot model,Magnolia.A "Federal" and a "Magnolia" top..

I have the Federal and it feels wonderful in the hand. I'm fighting myself every day to keep it NIB and out of my EDC rotation. I think it will ultimately be a battle I'll be happy to loose.

Buck offered a duplicate of the Federal on their website which was listed under web specials. It had reddish-brown paperstone handles. They did not finish the rocker pin and handle pins flush as they did with the "Federal".

Thanks. I must have missed that on the specials. I think it like the Federal better. It is interesting though. The bolsters look more rounded than on the Federal.

Light application of neat shoot is best if your thinking about it. I use Montana Pitch Blend, minkoil, beeswax and pine pitch. Probably any cream based conditioner would work great.
