I traded for a couple knives yesterday at a small local show. One of them was a Buck 692, rubber handles and brass guard/pommel. The blade was stamped 692 with a down arrow and USA stamped beneath it, and had a leather Buck sheath stamped 191 on the back. I am guessing the steel to be 420HC, but was this made in California or Idaho? Also, does it have the wrong sheath? It will be a working knife, but I am just curious. No box or anything. Thanks.

Well, Silenthunter, let me say: the sheath is not the wrong one. The 191 could be called the 692 with a wooden handle and a large gut hook in the blade. A collector would change the Sheath to a cordura one, because the black cordura is the correct sheath. But a user? The leather sheath of the 191 looks more valuable then the cordura sheath - that's my opinion

Best,
Haebbie.

I agree with Herbert on the change out on the sheath. However, the model #191 & 691 are for the gut hook knife called "Buck Zipper". The model #192 & 692 are for the non-gut hook "Vanguard".

The tang stamp with the arrow pointing down is for the 2007 year. That would be blades made with 420HC steel. In the 07 catalog the 19* models came with a brown leather sheath and wood handles on the knife, while the 69* models came with a black nylon sheath and textuized rubber handles.

hope this is the information you were looking for.
