Here is an ended auction that I watched but in the end decided to let pass:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=300085623483&rd=1&rd=1

* A quick search didn't reveal anything about the origin of this boxed edition.
* I don't buy used knives
* I began to have concerns as to whether that knife is actually a match to the box
* At the last second I realized the knife might be a Taylor.

So does anyone have any information about this 6OT in a wooden box with a wildlife picture?

Forgive my ignorance, but are some of the Taylors tang-stamped USA? If so, how do you tell the difference between pre-closing and Taylors? I know in a lot of cases, the handles look different to me, but I didn't think the Taylors were tang-stamped with USA. I'm sure I'm probably wrong on this one but that's one of the ways I've been using to determine whether old Schrade or new Schrade.

The tang stamp isn't visible in the auction photos.

But for your reference the Taylor Old Timers were stamped "SCHRADE" in the beginning, and often had "Old Timer Classic" printed on the blade. The newer ones have "SCHRADE/HAND MADE" tang stag stamps.

The genuine Schrade Old Timers are usually stamped something like these:

SCHRADE+
USA 6OT

SCHRADE
NY USA
34OT

SCHRADE
WALDEN
NY USA

Thanks Bob. When I'm making a purchase, if it states in the text that the tang is stamped Schrade USA, I usually take that at their word. This way, if I need to fall back and return the item, I'm standing on pretty firm ground in getting my money back from the seller. Sure, it's a hassle, but at what that knife sold for, I would have taken the chance and then dealt with Paypal if it wasn't as the seller stated. Sometimes you get taken, but sometimes, you can do the taking as well.

The seller does say it's a USA 6OT, and I have no reason to believe it's not. Whether or not the knife and box actually went together and the knife being "used" were the primary concerns. The possibility of a Taylor being sold as a USA knife was a tertiary concern, but with the inconcise photo it was a nagging thought none-the-less.

I mostly just wanted some basic info on the boxed set, as I know nothing about them and couldn't find any online references with a quick search. Have a scrap Franklin Mint knife display and a loose used 6OT, match them up and suddenly it's a valuable collectible... See the potential?

I've yet to be ripped off either, but it pays to be cautious.

For example, have you seen the Taylor Old Timers being packaged with 200th anniversary tins and shields? They'll be hitting eBay any minute now...

I've seen that print on the box lid somewhere before, I'm sure of it. Of course I can't remember where. Also, I noticed how the knife doesn't seem to fit in the cutout. See how the knife body near the pivot is riding up and out of the box lining? Maybe nothing but....?

Exactly. I sure would like to know what the oval sticker on the padding says.

Of course I could have asked the seller, but didn't think to ahead of time. I turned on the computer this morning about a minute and a half before the auction ended.
