I'm thinking of buying some 7.62x39 ammo for my Chinese SKS. I say thinking because as everyone knows ammo prices are just ridiculous now.

Anyway, I was looking online at Midway, and noticed they had 4 choices of "cheap" Wolf ammo: 1) 122 gr. FMJ, 2) 122 gr. JHP, 3) 124 gr. FMJ, 4) 124 gr. JHP.

Personally, I can't see why a company would make a round in the same caliber with the same type of bullet with only only 2 gr. of difference in weight. I mean, what kind of difference is that going to make ballistically, 1 or 2 ft. per second?

I'm guessing the FMJ would be more reliable in terms of feeding. But, the JHP would be the choice for ranges that don't allow you to shoot FMJ bullets.

I'm going to be using the ammo for target practice, so I'm mainly concerned with reliable feeding, accuracy, and low cost. I'm guessing for hunting, the JHP would be better?

I know Wolf ammo ain't the best. It shoots kinda dirty, and I've experienced hard primers in the past. Plus, I've heard that that lacquer coating can "melt off" in your gun's chamber, leading to extraction problems.

Anyone have experience in what worked best for their SKS's or AK's? Also, anyone know of any reliable places that sells 7.62 Russian for less than $4.59 for 20 rounds?

I have never had feed problems with any ammo in my SKS, it eats everything. I had all sorts of problems while using an aftermarket magazine, but I have never misfed using the stock magazine.

Gander Mountain near me has the Wolf ammo for $3.99 a box.

In the past, Norinco was the big player in this type of market. In fact, they are probably still in business and selling all over the globe under other names/brands. Wolf is semi-quality and works most of the time, but you might get a better deal by hitting some of the local gun shows in your area. There are some cheap sources out there, just do some searches on the various engines.

For target, all you will need is a basic FMJ. In the hunting scenario, you'd better get a nice JHP from a decent company. It isn't worth a screwed up hunting trip to try to save a few duckets on ammo. Of course, it depends on what you are hunting. And by the way, be sure to clean your gas-port and the gun on a regular basis following use. Some of the oldest ammo out there features mercury primers which have a torrid love affair with rust.

Ditto on the SKS digesting whatever brand I threw at it , not so with my finicky Saiga AK47.

I wouldn't worry about the hollow points jamming up an SKS. The Hollow Points are not the wide, nasty looking things that you find on American made handgun ammo, but rather a small hole through the nose. In nearly all instance, they don't even expand, or so I have heard.

Don't sweat the small stuff. The SKS will work. Period.

I agree. VC were dragging them through swamps and rice paddies with shitty chicom ammo. Don't worry about feeding yours a lower quality ammo than you'd feed a Kimber.

Ammo prices are high for a number of reasons but they won't go down !!

my yugo SKS eats it all -- I bought a ton of the wolf jhp and am still working through it.

for hunting with a SKS i would use federal soft points, for messing around i would use whatevers cheapest, none of my AK's or SKS's have EVER malfunctioned, not ever. to be honest i dont see a lot of diff in accuracy either, not till around 200 yds or so and up, for just short range messing around, again get the cheapest.
