In looking at completed auctions on Gunbroker, sporterized SKS bullpups built using a SG Works bullpup stock kit seem to be running about $550 for black stocks, or $750-$800-ish for camouflage painted stock/rifle packages.
The SKS was produced by several different Countries. I have a Yugo [Yugoslavian] and it's awesome for what it is.
on average, they are worth [stock] anywhere from $100-225 depending on age, condition, chrome/no chrome lining and country of manufacture.
Depending on what stock he installed, he could have paid anywhere from $69 to $230 for 'common' hardware alone. If he went to RifleTech, he could have paid up to $675....and to me, that's a bit ridiculous.
You could probably consider the firearm to be a reasonable "worth" of approximately $350 provided it works. I'd make a day for the range and try it before buying it. If he has multiple magazines, load and shoot all of them. Fill them and shoot them.
An SKS is a good carbine, but they have little resale value, regardless of any add on stock. A quick run to the local pawn shop or gun store will confirm this. Usually, they will sell retail used at around $125 to $150, the last time I looked, maybe $200 (but that would be unusual, I believe).
