Mods, if this is in poor taste I do apologize.

I am not trying to start another flame war nor am I trying to denigrate the Green Beret. On the contraray, I own one and love the ergos and such.
That being said, I wanted to hear from you, the user, and see what kind of 'real' world use you've put yours through.
I had considered selling mine in light of all the flack brought about by the recent test thread but I can't bring myself to part from it. I've had it about 2 years and while I haven't put it through much use I plan to take it out(camping and such) and see what it can really do.
I was hoping to hear from others in this regard.
I have been a bit hesitant to use it due to the stories I've read but then I realized how stupid that is, esp considering Chris's reputation as a knifemaker and the reputation of his blades.

Do yourself a favor and take that knife out and use it.;):p:D

CRK makes a great product and it would be silly to deny yourself the pleasure of using it in the field because of its performance in a destruction test.

Just because my car would be crushed by a tank doesn't keep me from driving and enjoying it.

go watch a video of one on knifetests.com:barf:

Thanks, but I don't always put 100% faith in a 'test' that doesn't specifically address true knife use.
Don't whack it with a sledge hammer and you'll be ok.

I've no intention of hitting any knife or even hatchet/ax with a sledge hammer.

Thanks Scott, I intend to.

if you like it...
use it.

but also, in the vid (which your not completley going by.. .but still) the knife lost it's factory edge very easily.
???
and honestly, if i were going to be doing alot of batoning through hard or frozen wood, I just wouldn't trust it.
but... thats just from my personnal experience and the vid I saw.
just because you don't intend to hit it with a hammer... idk but i accidentally (it was during hard use, but I'd expect some hard use from a camp knife. this use was so me and my friend could get to dry wood for a fire) batoned my ranger rd9 into my DFLE.
sometimes you just don't expect these things to happen.

and I would've thought the exposed metal would really suck if you were batoning.
but obviosuly, you like the knife, then by all means use it!
:D

I use my NR Warrior all the time camping. I probably push it more than I need to on purpose, just to see how it does. I tend to do quite a bit of batoning for firewood, and I hit pretty hard (I bench 325# -- a regular neanderthal . . .). I am, however, striking with wood, driving into wood. The NR works just fine for me.

Beyond that, I know that there are a lot of SF guys that use the GB and their Yarboroughs. Before the massive GB thread was closed, Team Sergeant piped in: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5515775&postcount=368 He was a bit punchy, quite funny really. There was some conjecture that perhaps we is not who he says we was. On the contrary, Team Sergeant is quite a prominent retired Army Special Forces soldier. I've had the honor of sharing a meal with him -- Team Sergeant is a super intelligent, well respected man that is very well connected in the SF community.

First off the Green Beret Knife is a well thought out made knife. Very comfortable in the hand, a light and swift knife. I have many, not saying how many I have so you can take notes:p But I will tell you that I use a couple of my 7" GB's and a couple of my 5.5" GB's regularly. I use them out in the field for Camping and Hunting, etc. I have cut and chop wood, leather, plastic, rope and many of animals while hunting. I use them for Camp cooking and food preparation. I have have dug in the dirt many, many times with them. I built many of shelters with them as well. Even throw them at targets occasionally. One time I even had no choice but to chop a hole in the ice for winter fishing. When they need sharpening, I sharpen them. On occasion there edges do need to be re-profiled. If I have the time I usually do it myself. But if I have a couple of other CRK's going to the shop for overhauls then I'll just send it along with the rest. I found the Test Destruction to be very interesting. It's always good to know what something is capable of doing to it's limits. Does the limits shown in the test apply to all the Green Beret Knives? ...we'll never know. But I will tell you with out a doubt, that ALL my Green Berets 5.5" or 7" have brought me home each and every time.

I would like to say that I appreciate Noss for taking the time to demonstrate the destruction of all the knives he has tested to date. But I will never ever push my knives to those edges. That's just not what I purchased them for.
In closing, do I think any less of the Green Beret Knife from the tests, NOPE! I will continue to use all of mine and will look to buy many more. A knife is a knife ...use it at as such and it will perform as a knife.

Try or Buy one ...I know you will appreciate it for it's intended purposes.

Good Luck,:)

Jules

Similar experiences here as Westllen. Only have one GB, a 5 1/2 as well as some from the one piece series. It has served me quite well and I spend alot of time in the mountains around here. I've had to sharpen out a couple of small initial chips in the edge at first, but my edge is thinned out with a 40 degree final bevel and it is standing up quite well now. If you want to use it by all means go ahead and enjoy it. Given respectable use it will likely outlast you and most anyone else who tend to take care of their tools, truth be told.

will the noss destruction test nonsense never end? It looks and feels like a fine knife. Boohoo, it breaks when one places it in a vice and hits it with a sledge. Is this on anyone's agenda? Serrations upset me much more than "poor" performance in a destruction "test".

I'm sure it'll stand up to more abuse than the standard outdoor knife: A Mora.

Correction:
This is not what happened. The knife was not placed in a vice when it broke. I was holding it in my hand and hitting it with the hammer into wood as I do with every knife I test. Watch the video and see for yourself.

This being said. Use and enjoy your Green Beret knives.

How would the GB7 stand up to the Pacific? Would the Pacific be stronger due to the shorter blade?

I am considering exchanging my GB7 for the Pacific - bad move? My project II is my go to forest tool and that one I'm keeping for sure!

i have both the 7 inch and the 5.5 inch. the 7 i dont use the 5.5 i use for camping and such i have not gotten any blisters from use and no blade breakage even with digging if you bought yours to use, use it you will enjoy it. by the way the pocket on the sheath hold my swiss champ nicely.

I think all the test were fair, Though I doubt you would ever have to push a knife to that extent, I would choose somthing else if my life was depending on it.

I watched the vids and thought the test was pretty ugly. LOTS of off center hits put uneven stress on the blade and I believe that greatly affected the blade. Not to mention beating any stainless steel with a freaking sledge hamer is gonna get you a broken knife. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Course that is the point of the test, to see when it will break. I saw no future but breakage when the hammer came out. I was impressed with how many hits and how much sideways prying the blade did survive. I would have no issue whatsoever trusting the GB. I would however, not loan my knife to noss4 if he said he wanted to cut string :) Not trying to knock on the tester for doing what he wants to with his knives, but to my mind that knife shrugged off a ton of abuse including prying, stabbing, and being beaten unmercifully.

The test didn't make me sell my GB. I figure, if it took a 3lb sledge whacked on the spine to break it the knife can't be all that bad.:p
