70: How did this happen . . . again?

I went 25 years with just a few knives - mostly working knives like my Buck 110 and some small carry/keychain knives. Then I was shown the Kershaw Leek framelock with SpeedSafe technology around 2004 or 2005. It got me interested in modern designs and materials. It started me down the road to EDC carry and collecting.

Fast forward 10 years, I had 70 knives and lots of $,$$$ invested. So I "rationalized" what I had and sold 20 or so off about a year and a half ago. I didn't need redundant knives or safe queens.

Then the next thing I know is that I am back up to 70 and now have $$,$$$ invested. So much for rational behavior.

I need to count but Im almost afraid to.

Also what to do with a dozen or so "cheap/junk" knives ? Is it kosher to take a pic and offer the lot as a giveaway?

In the end, you do what I did; sell off or give away all but the few you really love. Then stay away from forums. The longer I stayed away from the forums, the easier it got to get rid of knives. Now a very rarely tune in. I don't know the physiology at work, but the forums are a drive to collect and keep up with the jones. I still love knives, but the obsession has faded a great deal. For the past few years my 'collection' has been down to just a half dozen, and I'm happier.

I give away "cheap/junk" knives to people I don't like.

They think I'm awesome for giving them a "gift", and I'm still certain I haven't done them any favors.

Lousy of me, I know. But I stay karmically afloat by giving away great knives to folk I do like.

I did the same thing I decided I only needed 5 knives 45 knives later I just decided to give up on slimming down the collection because I tried for 5 and ended up with 45

I kind of realized that as I typed it out, I thought about putting a couple decent knives in there just to move the lot. I'll probably just put out a box of knives at work and watch em disappear.
Sorry for side tracking the thread.

Been collecting knives since I was a kid. Doing odd jobs, allowances and presents, I had every Buck made at the time and a very large Case peanut collection.

Fast forward....at 51 I am still buying knives.

My wife says I need help. ;)

The safe queens are like a bad savings account. Stuff happens and they are in great condition (only good for opening envelopes), so you sell a bunch for a good price (with the peace of mind, knowing you can do this at any time). Then you get the money you need for the emergency......but you spend half the cash on knives, without even realizing it!....true story

I now make sure to quickly use my newly purchased knives so I know I will lose a good amount if I resell....Making me buy less, but appreciate more

I feel like a yoyo I'll decide to downsize sell and give away a bunch of knives then the next thing I know I'm buying again. This hobby is an addiction and all the knife forums are enablers. I don't know exactly how much $$$$$ I have tied up in knives but it is thousands and that's really kind of stupid. I wish I could stop but the truth is I can't I am hooked.

70 huh? Ok, I only have about 40. I'm ok then.

I found a cure to the knife buying obsession.
Got the GF preggers, turned her into a wife, had a son and a stepson thrown in, got a new house and a few acres and a big fat ugly mortgage.
Lucky if I get 1 new folder a year now.
All good though.
