Hey guys, I've had a bunch of change saved up and done some cleaning in my room and now have $40 in change and an extra $30 cash to spend. I'm curious of any suggestions you guys might have, I'm looking for something with a good bang for buck deal or just a great purchase. Keep in mind that I am 18 and go to college, but hopefully would carry the knife with me everyday. I'm interested in the 550 with olive drab handle, possibly mini ascent and a SAK one handed trailmaster, or even a leatherman pst and trailmaster (seems kind of redundant though). I also like the Endura in stainless. Please help me make up my mind guys!

Get a plain-edge Spyderco Native III...That's alot of good knife "for the money".

I second the Native suggestion. The Native III or the Lightweight Native are great choices for the $$$.

I can't argue with the above suggestions, but you can also get a BM 551 with D2 steel from Cabela's for $70. My brother-in-law just got one and it's really a nice piece.

Take a look at a Kershaw Blur. It has excellent fit and finish, has the Speed Safe mechanism and is wicked sharp.:D

The new Scorpius is awesome. VG-10 steel, reversable clip for tipup or tipdown (right hand only), ergonomic handle, great balance and feel, and priced well within your range. Its a real cutter too.;)

The OH Trailmaster is an excellent SAK, and covers you for a serrated blade. The mini-Grip is a good knife, as is the Endura. The FRN comes in VG10 and is much lighter than SS. I think you can get a sweet set for ~$60+shipping.

the benchmade griptillian has got to be the most fun for your money as well as a all around tough knife. i carried one for work for a year. now i carry a plain edge stainless endura everyday and it's awesome. very sharp edge and very solid. you can;t go wrong with either. just get something with a decent steel and you won't be sorry.

I'd recommend the Griptillian. Check to see if Cabelas is still offering them with D2 steel. I really like the mini-griptillian, btw.

I prefer plain edge.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a SS spyderco kiwi for 50 bucks from www.omegatactical.com
Nice little folder that sits nice in the 5th pocket of your jeans with a lanyard. That vg-10 is sharp as a mother f'er too!
Email vince, he might have some left.

You can't go wrong with a Spyderco. I suggest either the Native, Delica or Endura.

Spyderco PE/FRN Endura, Delica, or Native III. Great bang for your buck, and hard to match in their price range.

what is your campus policy on knives? i'd be very cautious carrying anything other than a slipjoint or multitool.
if the policy is cool, get one of the native models, either native III or native I w/ S30V.

The olive handled 550 Griptilian is simply awesome.

I prefer the 1/2 serrated 550 modified sheepsfoot blade with the oval thumb-hole.
It has replaced my Spyderco Endura and my Spyderco G-10 Police as EDC.

Good luck,
Allen.

I note that about going to college - take the cautious route and check any campus policy regarding knives and possible "weapons" definitions/restrictions.

I would suggest (and recommend) a SAK :D - since they are universally recognized and mostly unlikely to be regarded as a weapon - but even then beware of so called zero-tolerance rules......

The minimalist SAK for me would be the Victorinox Waiter
53891_l.jpg

waiter #53891 ~$11
size:84 mm | 3 1/4 inch
Large Blade
Cap Lifter with Can Opener
Screwdriver
Wire Stripper
Key Ring
Toothpick
Tweezers
Corkscrew

See that price $11? - that still leaves you with nearly $60 for another knife! Ok, ok shipping will cost you say another $5 - so you still have $54 right?

SAK too small/minimalist?

#54941, #54943 : compact knife ~$21

#53201, #53203, #53205, #53206 : huntsman ~$21

Still too small?

#53501, #53503 : swisschamp ~$42

See that $42 for a SwissChamp - now that's a bargain....

Now if college campus policy knife rules are NOT a problem
then I like the Speed-Safe assisted opening Kershaw/Ken Onion Leek -

Kershaw/Ken Onion LEEK (pics)
Kershaw Rainbow Leek - a pictorial review

The middle knife is the regular bead-blast finish all stainless steel I've seen it as low as ~$40

For a bit more flash or novelty the Rainbow Leek (upper knife) with the anodized Titanium oxide finish ~$60

The Kershaw Ken Onion designed Vapor (bottom knife) and Vapor II are really good value for money -
$20 for the smaller Vapor and about $25 for the larger Vapor II, both from Wal-Mart....
A $25 Sebenza? or is this just Vapor too?

Note: I used Froogle.com to scan for low prices -
and came across this vendor

http://shop.vendio.com/billky/home.html

who seemed to be selling the Kershaw Leeks at extraorinarily LOW prices - like

Leek = $34!!
http://shop.vendio.com/billky/item/617903433/index.html

Rainbow Leek = $49!!
http://shop.vendio.com/billky/item/617894323/index.html

Anyone know about this vendor?

A lot of people carry knives here...but this is a small college in the south, so I'm sure most places are different.

I am not a SOG fan, but I did handle a Flash II. I was really impressed. Assited opening, 3.5" blade, .125" thick. All this for less than $50.00. Check one out here www.sogbest.com .
