I pulled my 703 out of the knife roll this morning, heading out to a local farmers market. Wanted to show one of the dealer the basic 7** series design, he said he would look for a 701 for me. As all good OCD knife knuts do, I had to open it up. Opened the main blade, closed it. Went to open the sheepsfoot blade, and a God awful groan of metal occurred, followed by the sheepsfoot/spey backspring being ripped out in the opposite direction, and sheared in half:eek::eek::eek:. Expectedly, I uttered many different curses, and have the knife ready to head back to Buck. I've never had any problems with this knife. WTF?

I can't transfer pics from my phone to my computer, but it looks like an L almost.

Sad to say, but since that knife is no longer in production, your chances of getting it repaired are slim to none. Most likely, they will offer you a replacement out of the 300 series. Luckily, they show up on ebay fairly frequently. Good luck!!

I have an article that was sent to me by one of the 700 collectors on the forum that refers to the problem with the springs breaking. I believe it was with the earlier models, and was a common problem. I'll try to find it and read it again.

Couldn't a 303 spring work? Looks like it should.

"Couldn't a 303 spring work?"

I'd give the factory first crack at it, but if'n that fails, maybe a good tinker or one of the custom knife builders could get the 303 spring in there and make it work. Its worth a try. Granted, it affects the collectability, but it won't hurt the usin' none.

yes i sent in a 700 and got back a 303 also
nice knife
it will be a prize knife most likely
trying to think of another contest give away
the current one will be over in a week or so..

Are you planning on trying a spring replacement??? Even if not, you might still want to get an opinion from Leroy Remer on replacing it. :)

Got my new issue of Knife World in the mail today, and saw the ad from the former Case employee, who does knife repair. Those wheels are smoking upstairs!
