707 vs 943 vs other

Hi guys I'm looking at the BM models 707 sequel and 943. Similar prices, but the 943 has a better blade steel. I do like the blade shape on the 707 a bit more though. Which one do you all prefer? I need a small EDC. I'm not too picky about my steels, I just need something that's easy to touch up on the sharpmaker. I looked at some spyderco's, but something about them turned me off. The only spyderco I really liked was the para2, but it seemed kind of big for EDC. If you have any suggestions other than these knives, please let me know. Keep in mind I'm coming from a kershaw burst. I really liked the size and shape of it, but I'm looking for a bit more quality (the speedsafe broke on me last week). All thoughts and suggestions are greatly welcomed and appreciated!

guidelines
  • manual (no assisted openers)
  • I prefer thumb studs (not mandatory though)
  • less than 200 dollars
  • no liner lock (compression, axis, frame are ok)
  • blade < 3.5 inches
  • I would like to avoid plastic handle scales (really like aluminum/TI, G10 is OK)

thanks,
T

The 707/943/940 are amazing knives. Can't go wrong with any of those blades! I would probably go with the 943 if you don't want a 940.

That's a tough choice, but I prefer the 707. I have both the 707 and 940, but they are both in premium steels. I carry the 707 every day.
You should really consider the new BM485. It is like the spawn of the 707 and 940 and comes in M390 steel. I think it to be a perfect compromise in your situation. I will have one if not two.

For me it would be the 943 and it is not even remotely close. I find the 707 looks nice in pictures but looks and feels cheap in the hand.

Man, my 707 doesn't feel cheap to me. If you said that about a grip or a 530 I could agree, but the full liners and aluminum tends not to feel cheap. My is currently equipped with G-10/CF layered and it's likely just as solid as any production knife I've owned. I value your opinion as others may share it, but there are many who are quite drawn to the 707 and feel it is a quintessential BM.

Just out of curiosity, what do you feel is a solid feeling model BM?

Itannerjh: let me know what you think of the BM485.

I was going to ask him that. I handled a 707 twice and it felt very nice!

I've owned both, while the 943 is slim and unnoticeable in the pocket the 707 is even more so. Since then Ive sold my 943 and still have my 707, maybe it's a drop point thing or the 707 is just a little more compact. I'm not a fan of aluminum handles at all so I had some ironwood scales made up for it. Guess I'm in the 707 camp but it's a very tight race.
Edit: btw both of these knives have the smoothest action out of any axis locks I have handled.

Back when I was interested in BM , I had many variations of the 707. It's an exceptional small knife and I cannot recomend it enough. It's a shame the price is ridiculous for one these days.

The 943 doesn't appeal to me in the least. I've used one only briefly and that was enough.

You could also pick up a 707 in M390......harder to find......but they are around.......and an incredible little knife.....

I haven't handled a 485, but I'll have one this year. I also plan to pick up a 484, but it is more substantial in pocket and hand than both you have mentioned with a similiar short blade. My choice all things considered would be the 485

It's just like a little block of aluminum. Not very well contoured with just an inlay of g10 that looks a little slap dash.

I was prepared to like the 707, I really was. I was looking for something nicer than the 530 in the vein of the 943 I used to have.

Take a look at the BM 903, it is a really good knife. Also take a look at the Spyderco Native 5 G-10, it is an AWESOME knife.

My friend had a 943, and I really liked the balance. The blade was super easy to deploy; but I really disliked the blade shape. It was really skinny, and he said it was hard to cut things with. Is the 707 similar? I looked at the 485, it looks interesting. I really like the pocket clip, but again, I'm not sure how that blade shape would compare to the 707. The thumb studs look like they might be hard to deploy, also, the axis lock is shrunken on it? Not sure why BM decided to do that. To be honest, it kind of reminds me of a de-assisted g10 emissary.

do you have any pics with the ironwood scales? that sounds really interesting, I'd love to see it! Did you make them or just order them?

yes, the 943 is starting to loose its appeal to me as well. You say you moved on, to customs? or are you just more fond of another production brand now?

Lord that is a beautiful knife. Yeah, I actually stumbled across that version on the BM website, and I was so excited! I like the look of the carbon fiber SO MUCH more than the G10. If only I could find one...

does anybody have any experience with the spyderco:
  • dice
  • domino
  • manix 2 (g10 version)
  • sage 2
  • sage 1

also pmili is still on my mind, but mostly the ones mentioned above. I'm also curious as to how spyderco's customer support compares to BM. I've heard nothing but good things about BMs warranty and customer survice, whereas I haven't really heard as much about spyderco...

I have a 943
It is a very slim design which , once fitted with a contego clip carries very low in the pocket
I really like it in this configuration

The blade is easy to sharpen

I am used to carry it when a more noticeable knife is not appropriate or when I am carrying suits.
