I received my 710-142 today and am very disappointed in the detent feel when closing.

It feels like 2 sheets of Styrofoam being squeezed together with a very slight grinding feel to it.
It opens just fine, only feeling this when closing it.

I loosened the pivot screw to the point it was nearly falling out and it still does this.

I have a 940 gold class and the detent upon closing is butter smooth. If I pull the lock back the blade closes on it's own.

With the 710-142, no matter how loose I make the pivot screw it won't close on it's own.

I'd like to know if they're all like this, if mine is defective or if it needs a break-in period. The 940-121 did not need break-in.

Thanks for your responses.

I'd send it back to the dealer for a better one. It's a shame a $510 knife is like that.

Overall, do you like the looks of it?

Yes, it looks beautiful.

In terms of feel in hand/grip/purchase, my previous 2 orders, the Paramilitary 2 and Southard feel much more solid in hand and open/close much smoother, but the 710-142 is just beautiful.

I'll call the store tomorrow to discuss sending it back.

They are not like that and I agree you should have the dealer replace this knife. Given it is brand new and high-dollar, it should not have this issues and you should not have to spend money on or wait on a repair to a knife that should work right to begin with, especially a Gold Class given most of them sport exceptional fit and finish.

Yea that doesn't sound right. Mine is very smooth opening and closing out of the box.

Yes you should definitely bring it back to the dealer and exchange it. Yet another GC that has issues right out of the box. It's just not right.

Replacement is on the way!

Has anyone tried to sharpen the 710 on an Edge Pro? Do the standard width stones work with on the 710 recurve?

The replacement arrived!

It's still not as smooth as my 940-121. There is still a tiny bit of rough feel after detent, but it's 50% better than the previous one.
I'll be keeping it. Looks amazing.

Lubed it up with AWL and tested the Edge Pro with polishing tape. It appears to go over the edge without nicking the recurve so I expect sharpening will go well.

Ordered Shapton 4k and 8k glass stones and an angle cube for the Edge Pro.

Unsure when sharpening if I should hold the knife on the flat back part of the blade or rest it along the grind. Using the grind may give me an angle different than my setting, but it seems like a more stable surface. The flat part of the blade is small, may be difficult to hold for hours.

If anyone has used an Edge Pro and standard size stones to sharpen a 710, I'd like your input.

Thanks

None of my axis locks are adjusted to have the blade fall closed when the lock is held open. Anytime I have adjusted them this way it resulted in side-to-side blade play. I prefer to no blade play and to tap it closed when hold the lock open.

This is just my experience adjusting my own. I did have a gritty feel one time and polished the contacting surfaces between the axis bar and the blade to 2000+polish. Smoothed it up nice.

I do agree for $500 plus if you didn't like it, BM should make it right. But I guess they can't be set perfect for everyone.

Glad you got it resolved to an acceptable level at the least.

Recommendation for the Edge Pro? Use their 1/2" stones for the recurve on the 710. It works on my 710D2.
