Sir,
I personally own the Mini Manix and it is one heck of a knife. It is a little armadillo that fits the hands wonderfully and is builit like a tank. I have owned the 710 and prefer the Mini Manix by far
These are both very good knives and extremely different in proportion, materials, and lock type. I would ask yourself which one you like the looks of best and just buy it.
I've had both and like the mini Manix better. Although the 710 is a great knife, it's really a personal choice. Try both and I'll bet you like one better than the other.
You should check out both in person before choosing if you can. I'd go with the 710, only because I think the Mini Manix's blade is too small for me. It also depends on the type of work you'll be doing. I'd go with the Mini Manix for tough jobs, the 710 for light to medium work and overall edc.
I have the 710 in 154CM and thought it was merely "o.k.", until I figured out how to buff the edge using Flexcut and the back of a legal pad. It is now scary sharp and my favorite EDC. I haven't had much luck getting a good edge on my Spydercos, especially anything with ATS-55. The Spyderco Military looks pretty enticing, though.
Your best bet is to handle both before you buy. It all depends on what you want. To me they are two totally different knives, like Beauty and the Beast. I think the 710 is much more elegant, it's a big knife that doesn't feel big. The Mini-Manix is a big knife and has a big footprint. I like to use the 710 for more light duty chores like cutting up a piece of fruit or opening packages. The Manix I use more for work cutting burlap, paper and popping stapels out of boxes. Thats not to say both couldn't do each others job, just what I like to use them for. Of the 2 I would say I like the 710 more because it carrys better than Mini-Manix.
If you want to carry a serious knife and shock other ppl. take the Mini Manix. If you can stand just having a serious knife, go with the 710.
I have used the Mini Manix during a passaround and it is nice but the "first impression" on myself and on others was disturbing. Mine was like the knife is made to turn around pancakes.
I would also agree that they are very different. I went with the 710D2 - both the Manix and Mini-Manix were simply too heavy for my liking. Not that they weren't nice knives, mind you, they were. I may still ultimately end up with one or the other, but for the moment, I'm enjoying my 710, and newer acquisitions.
