Has anyone had or seen a 710 with the blade sitting so high like mine? I can snag it with my finger. It’s always kinda bugged me. I feel that it’s possibly due to the backspacer issue that was experienced by many...maybe Benchmade made some adjustments to their machines and was like...sitting too low? now deal with this mother f*****. Maybe it’s just an example of a Friday at Benchmade in 2015...all joking aside, I’d really appreciate if anyone could share their thoughts on the matter.

Thanks!

I checked on both of my 710s and the tip of the blade sits below the liners. I have to push the tip of my finger down into the liner to get it to catch the tip one one. The other doesn’t catch.

You said that you think it is the back spacer that is causing the blade to sit proud of the liner. To check and be totally sure you will need to partially disassemble the knife by removing one scale and liner. You can ditch the back spacer and at one time MXG gear made 710 titanium barrel spacers. You could give that a try. The other option is to send it to Benchmade to fix.

Nah it’s not the backspacer, it’s the notch in the blade that captures the axis when closed. It’s like it’s too shallow or something, causing the blade to sit higher than usual...just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I really appreciate you actually checking!

Sounds like you need to reach out to Benchmade warranty. They might still have replacement 710 blades available.

Look at the kinda square dark spot on this tang. That is where the blade rests on the lock bar which acts as a blade stop (for closing). If you are handy, you can file a deeper recess with a rat tail diamond file.image.jpeg

Yes! I had the same thing on my Knifeworks SE 710. In comparison, a second 710 I purchased locally a few years ago is not like this.

I sent my KW's 710 to BM under warranty and (from what I can tell) they ground the tip lower... I'm pretty sure it took a mm or so off of the length of the blade. Now, it still sits awfully high, but I can't cut my finger on it unless I jam my finger down over it when closed... still sits higher than my other 710. The responses to my post on the BM forum suggested that a couple 710's had this issue.

Thanks! I appreciate the responses.
I’ll take a few passes with the file...carefully. I feel while it will indeed cause the blade to sit lower, it may cause axis retention issues....I don’t know. I want to be clear that I’m not upset with Benchmades cq. They made this knife for, what, almost 20 yrs? And a majority of em are perfect. The 710 didn’t gain a following from being plagued with issues.
Again, thanks for your advice and input!

So I took a little off, gained about 1/32. I’m hesitant to mess around any further...thanks for the advice and input!

i remember a lot of the first run 710-1401’s having the same problem. i don’t recall what benchmade did to correct it though. i don’t know taft they can do anything if it requires a blade replacement, i doubt they have any blades left after it’s been discontinued this long

Absolutely. It’s been like this out of the box and hasn’t stopped me from using it. Just adds a bit of character.
