i am looking for some advice on buying a new 72 hour frame backpack...i was thinking of buying a DG 6, as found on wiggys.com but i was wondering if anyone knew of another bag that would suit my needs as my old frame pack just wont cut it anymore.

anybody have any reccomendations?

I carry an Osprey 3800 CI Exos now. The most comfortable pack I have ever used. It weighs in at 3 LB. Great pack.

Not cheap though.

My wife and I LOVE our Deuter ACT Lite! GREAT bag for the price, carries heavy loads very comfortably, and is adjustable to your torso length, and weighs about 3lbs.

That being said, a lot has to do with how much weight you will be carrying, and how much volume your gear takes up, AND how well it fits YOU. If you are an ultralight backpacker with a <10lb. base weight, then this is a bit overkill, but if you will be carrying anywhere from 30-45lbs. then this bag is more appropriate.

I always suggest trying on a pack with weight in it before buying it. A dream pack for me, might be a torture device for you. And that's no exaggeration. For instance, a lot of people like the Osprey, but for my body type it was very uncomfortable.

I use a kelty trekker 3950 now. Last years model so you can find em for about 80 bucks on google.

CamelBak HAWG works fine for me, as a 72 hour bag. It carries all I need for food, water, comfort and security.

Another vote for www.ospreypacks.com

This pack here is excellent for short trips, where you dont pack bulky winter clothing. The Osprey Stratos 34

That is VERY good advise........:thumbup: You wouldn't by a pair of boots with out trying them on?

I get pack envy when I see those Osprey's. They really are nice packs, I'd like to get one some day. (I'm so damn cheap when it comes to gear though :o)

Kelty redwing is nice. 511 rush 72 has some excellent features also. If you don't mind spending some money, you can't beat Kifaru IMHO. I got by fine with a Kelty redwing for years, then I discovered Kifaru. Have a Navigator and a Scout from them. Navigator might be a little large for what you're thinking, but they have many more options. Just purchased a 511 rush 72 for my truck bag, and I am impressed with it so far.

+1 on the Kelty Redwing 3100. I use that one, and my wife uses the 2650. Gonna get another 2650 for my 13yo son too. I love Kelty gear!!

PoleCat--Is that the Small Forest Axe on the outside of your pack?

How well does it ride on the outside of your pack?

Yes, thats the small forest axe.

The loops at the bottom of the pack are meant for ice axes, so its a tight fit around my axe-head. The SFA fits, but i dont think a bigger axe would. The handle is fastened at the top with a bungee cord that can be cinched tight. The axe rides nice and tight on my pack. It dosent flap around and is mounted so close that it dosent upset the balance of the pack.

The mounting points can be seen on the first pic i posted.

do you need an external framed pack? if so, in addition to Wiggy's- also look at Kifaru, Mystery Ranch, Eberlestock- spendy, but you don't see too many complaints about their utility

if not, something in the 35-45 liter ballpark w/ an internal frame should suffice for most 3 day load-outs- I've also found Osprey stuff to be very good (the Exos actually does have a quasi external frame)
