I was lookin to purchase a 730-1301 the other day . When I handled the knife the scales were sharp on the edges didn't feel good in my hand. If you sanded the edges of the scales would that ruin the value of the knife? I don't own a knife that I wouldn't carry. Is the scales on 730-1301 all have sharp scales?

I've handled one of those before and I don't remember the scales being sharp, then again I don't have soft dainty hands, definitely work hardened.

I would most certainly imagine sanding the scales down would effect the value, even just the edges, if I was going to do that I would make it a workhorse and not worry about value.

Its a LE so I would make sure thats what you want to do before starting to sand.

The original 810 was hard to work with because of the sharp ridges on the scales. A bunch of us took sand paper and made the knives easier to use. After many complaints the next generation came out of the factory smoother. I find the Ares to be very comfortable to hold and use for long periods, but each of us are different. If the knife is a LE and there's concern about value, sanding or any modding would affect that. But if you're buying the thing to use, don't worry about it - there are many like myself that prefer and seek out more affordable users. In a few cases I own duplicates; one NIB and the other a user if I really liked the model well enough.

Me too! Mostly because I'm scared of losing my user or damaging it beyond repair. It's nice to know I can fall back on another!

If you are worried about value, even carrying the knife in your pocket will affect its value. If it is a knife that you intend to carry and use, then be sure about that decision and then modify it if it will help you to use it. It won't be worth anything to you if you carry it for awhile and then stop carrying it because it is not comfortable to use.
