Hey guys,

Just thought I'd mention I got a BM Ares 732D2BT delivered yesterday. Special thanks to the people who recommended the Ares way back in May when I was asking about what Benchmade to buy next. I guess patience has its advantages, I got the steel I wanted, and the colour too!

I don't have my USB card reader on me, but here's a pic I found that does it justice.

Benchmade 732D2BT

Thanks again for the advice.

(oh, it's #33/100 for those who care)

Regards,

Shaun.

I have the 730CFHS, and it looks a lot like that one but with M2 steel, and Carbon fiber. It has been one of my favorite EDC knives for quite a while now. Hope you don't just put this one in a box somewhere. These things are made to be used! Enjoy!

DD,

No worries, this is gonna be primarily a user :D. I don't have any safe queens, and I still don't quite grasp the idea of an upgraded steel for a collector's piece, but, to each his own, I'll be using mine! That limited run 730CFHS is a wicked knife, wish they still made those!

Regards,

Shaun.

Good choice :)

I've got one and am quite happy with it. I had held off for a long time to get the Ares because of the funky handle colors so when the black G-10 and D2 came around I jumped on it.

cpirtle, that's exactly what I thought :D Anyone else with an Ares notice that the AXIS lines up differently than other AXIS folders (comparing it to my mini-grip and my TSEK). Basically, when the knife is closed, AXIS is full forward position. When knife is opened, the AXIS locks, but the AXIS pin is only roughly half way forward on the Ares (whereas on my other's it is full forward again). But the pin and the blade meet up in the right place. All the pictures I've found on the net confirm this, I just though that was a little odd that it was designed this way. No better, no worse, just different I guess.

Take it easy,

Shaun.

Actually, it's advantageous for the lock bar to be more toward the rear of the slot it rides in. This allows for more room for wear on the lock.

Think about it, if the lock is at it's farthest point forward and the tang wears a little further you'll get blade play.

I have some that are pretty far forward (70-80%) and others that are only about 1/2 way. Not carrying an axis today to look though.

FWIW I have several Axis locks that I have used and abused more than I did some sorority chicks in college, and my Axis hasn't worn at all.

I just ordered one of the 730D2CF and I can't wait till it gets here. I had a 730CFHS and I got rid of it and I regret it, but I think the D2 will be just as good as M2. Any thoughts on the comparison between the two steels. I have had a couple of knives with D2, Kabar/Dozier Thorn, Camillus E.D.C., and I love that steel. Let me know what you think.

I think M2 is better, especially in edge retention and chip resistance.

But for the most part BM's D2 is no slouch and it also boasts pretty good rust resistance. You can breathe on uncoated M2 and it will rust.

More of my knives from BM are D2 than M2, I like both equally but if forced to choose I would still go M2.
