The wife and I went to the cabin this past weekend, to celebrate our 7th anniversary. We planned on doing a hike at the Silver Mines Recreation Area. Had a great time, and the weather reached the 60's.

We decided to walk down to the river, to do a little plinking:

The river is about 100 yards down the hill:

Me shooting my Bill Hays Hathcock Sniper SS. I swear I used to have a butt. Looks like I have noassatall disease now, haha. There was a lead sinker hanging by some fishing line from a tree. Never did hit it, but it was good practice. Note the pointed rock in the background, and one just under my hand, and the island the water goes around:

We had never walked past this area before, and decided to walk up river a bit. Went about another 100 yards. You can see the rocks I mentioned to the left:

Walking up to a rather larger rock outcropping. Just passed it, on the left, is a creek that empties into the river:

Um, a tree:

Closer to the rock:

The creek I was talking about. Really pretty:

Leaf with frost the wife took:

The lane was very icy. Not a problem to straddle it while driving though:

Batonning some wood for the wood stove:

You can see where I started this one. Once it reached that gnarly spot, it wasn't going anywhere:

So I turned it upside down, where the grain was straighter. Once it reached that same spot, it wasn't going anywhere. Not worth busting a blade over:

So, I used a wedge shaped piece of wood, to use for batonning:

That was some tough stuff. I beat on it like it stole something. Went as far as it did, but no more:

You can see where it started cracking:

Broke it off:

No way I was gonna attempt these pieces:

The BK4 did great. This is such a versatile blade, I almost consider it more of a tool than a knife:

Sunday, we went to Silver Mines. Really pretty area. This was next to the parking lot:

This is as close as I got to it:

The wife took these next 2 shots. She went all the way down to the river. She weighs half as much as I do, and can maneuver a little better than I can:

A rolling stone gathers no moss, but a stationary one sure the hell does:

We didn't stop and do the meal thing, but the wife did stop for an espresso, and Sambuca:

You can see a kayaker if you look closely. There were many kayakers there. It was so nice out. Didn't even remotely need a coat on:

It was really beautiful there, and of course we plan to return. We just did a fraction of the trail. It connects to Millstream Gardens, about 3 miles away.

When we returned, I got a fire going, to get some coals for cooking:

I've always wanted to try a grill basket, and Wally had them for 3 bucks, so I gave one a go. Worked very well, and was nice to flip all 4 at once:

Took about 6 minutes per side on a 4 Mississippi:

Tasted excellent:

All in all, had a blast. Like I said, the weather was freaking perfect. We lucked out yet again. I took all kinds of toys to use, and for photos, but there was too much going on to use them all. I need to concentrate on just a few at a time, as opposed to many at once. Anywhos, thanks for looking.

Thanks man, appreciate it. We have a lot of fun together. We were just talking about that the other day, about how much we've done together in 7 years.

Congratulations, Dubz. It looks like you had a great time out and about! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys, appreciate it. Seems every year for our anniversary, despite being in January, has been very nice out.

Out of curiosity, do you need to worry about bears in those parts?

There are bears, and mountain lions in the area. The previous owner had it for 24 years, and never saw any. I read that there are around 300 bears in the state, mostly concentrated in the south. I was talking to a kayaker there that was packing up when we arrived, and he said that bears were becoming a problem in the area. I met a guy a few months ago, that lives in my area full time, and he has seen two bears in 7 years, but says he sees the cats frequently. He's probably seeing bobcats though, as they're more common.

Congrats on the anniversary and thanks for sharing those photos. That looks like an awesome place.

Congratulations on the anniversary Dubz, looks like a great time and great scenery. glad you guys enjoyed yourselves.

Congrats man.

And great pictures. Looked like a great trip. That dam was pretty neat looking too.
