How tall of a grind will an 8" contact wheel make on 1/8" steel?
Most blades I will want to hollow grind will be less than an inch wide. Just curious if I will have to get a 10" or bigger.

Wow thats pretty cool! Thanks! Looks as though I will need at least a 10" though.

I've had that $120 10" contact wheel in my watch list on Ebay for awhile. But I just seem to think that there may be other things that will work, but would like some suggestions before I do so. I've heard of people using those 8" "Non Marking" wheels from accesscaster.com, so why wouldnt something like this work?

Too heavy? Or is the rubber too soft?

Or this? http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail...AmgqJ2yFwzCCo_p0tFfiBxoC57Xw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

The problem with using tires/wheels for contact wheels is they are never balanced, run one of those wheels at high rpm's and your grinder will jump off the bench and walk across the floor like it's alive

That doesnt sound fun. I almost forgot about the whole 3000 rpm thing. lol. Hm. The only other option I seen out there (cheaper) is the Grizzly 10" wheel but, you cant press bearings in them. Don't know how I'd attach it.

For $120ish you can send an 8 inch wheel into sunray and have it resurfaced at 10" which is what I have done, bad part its been almost 4 weeks and I am still waiting for my new 8 inch wheel to show up so I can send my old wheel in

Resurfaced to 10"? Do they just add super thick rubber or something? Hm. I'll have to think about that. I will be fine with my flat platen for now. I just really wanted to get a wheel and start doing some hollow grinds. I can wait.

Is the $120 just for the resurfacing or does that include balancing and other stuff? I have a wheel I think might work but I would need new bearings and balanced, maybe more.

Resurface only, The core from an 8 inch contact wheel should already be balanced, I'm sure they can put a new Bearing in for you

you can walk a hollow grind up as tall as you like .

I have walked a few of my grinds up, but it is a son-of-a-gun to get rid of the ripples once you are up around 800 grit, its easy to see at 220 which is were I was at in this picture

I see myself screwing up plenty of blanks trying to get that right.... I'm going to have to just get a 10 or 12" to start.
