I have recently decided that it is time to move beyond the Sharpmaker(which I do love) and develop a better understanding of freehand sharpening. After countless hours spent reading/researching on the forums, as well as Youtube, I have decided that the 8" DMT continuous stones are the ones for me. I just ordered a kit from Sharpeningsupplies(dot)com that includes 4 grits, EC, C, F, and EF for $180 bucks. I also snagged a stone holder for them. Anybody have much experience with Sharpeningsupplies? They seem to have very reasonable prices, and were just about the only place I could find that had most of the DMT products in stock. Either way, I am very excited for the arrival of these stones....they should provide many hours of satisfaction/frustration/revelation/meditation etc.... :D

You are off to a great start! Some guys will add to what you have (an EEC, EEF, perhaps some strops and DMT pastes), but what you have is adequate to do a lot of re profiling and serious sharpening.

Yeah, I plan on adding all of the stones and pastes later on, to complete the spectrum. And Unit, I based a lot of this purchase on you recommending the 8 inch DMTs in another post. :)

I placed the exact same order with sharpeningsupplies.com this past Sunday. It should be waiting for me when I get home tonight!

That is a great set to start out on.

I am awaiting the dmt8xx and am going to buy the dmt8ee with my next paycheck to round out the set.

I suggest getting the xc/c and f/ef diafolds for sharpening 'on the go'.
