Im looking to purchase some 8 inch benchstones. I have found some good course stones so now Im looking for some fine and ultra fine stones for finishing work.

Does DMT make a good finishing stone in diamond?

Where can I find some decent benchstones at a reasonable price?

The stones you choose will be based on the knives you sharpen. Also, stick with one type of stone it will cause less problems down the road.

So....... what types of knives do you sharpen? folders, fixed, kitchen knives, standard steels, super steels?

All the above. I will be sharpening a wide variety of knives.

Go for the diamond stones. They will last forever, sharpen the hardest steel, and stay flat! Personally, I prefer good quality water stones, but then, I don't sharpen the newer super steels.

DMT has some 2.5X8" stones in the grits your inquiring . (coarse, fine, X-fine) . They are of the interrupted surface which I don't care for but to each his own . However, I like the size . Try Sharpeningsupplies.com and Knifecenters.com they'll have what you want . The diamond impart a better edge . DM

Will you be sharpening freehand with these stones or using some sort of jig?

My preference is to use DMT's up to the "Fine" level... then use Shapton glass stones to 16000... then strops.

There are lots of other good options though.

Spyderco ceramics are a bit pricey, but they are great. I have the 3" wide Ultra fine that gives a wonderful polished edge, and works great for micro bevel touch ups. I have a DMT coarse diamond slab, and that reprofiles really quick.

Not to derail this thread - I think this is on topic.

What do you guys think about the DMT 6" dual sided stones? I could save a lot of cash by getting those over the 8" stones I've been pricing.

The reason I ask is I only sharpen folders and I kind of think they'd be plenty, given the fact that I've been freehanding with Dia-Folds for several months now, at 4" or less, given the fact that part of the stone has the handle attached over it.

I'm getting screaming sharp edges off the Dia-Folds and though I'd like the 8" stones, they're just so darn expensive for sharpening the 10 folders I own.

So what's your opinion on them?

Bigger stone.... more room to work.

I started with the 6in stones too ;)
