A lot of people have been asking to see this -- heard me talk about it and can't find it in the archives so here it is again.

One handle is bone, all the rest are ivory. Khukuri is about 150 years old and we think it was made in Salyan district.

No. Not for sale.

Khukuri FAQ

There appears to be some kind of brushed coating on the blade. Is this the way it actually looks, or was the photo touched up a bit?

Uncle Bill,

Thanks for the pix. That looks just like a kuke I purchased off ebay listed as "horn handled knife. there are five tools left intact with pockets for six more. The scabbard is flat with the pouches sewn to the outside. There is also a small stilized Khukri that is all metal engraved and painted looks to be bronze. I was waiting til I got some time to post it to you. I'm glad I guestimated the age about right. When I get some time I'll try to get a friend to take pics of it I'm curious about some of the features of the scabbard and there is an arrowhead shaped pouch that was in the pocket.

God Bless,

ts

The pouch is traditionally used to hold tinder. Not a bad thing to have with you even today. I usually carry vasalene soaked cotton in a little ziplock in my wallet. I imagine the Nepalese used something similar to the charcloth of our mountain men. Kami Sherpa or Bill may be able to enlighten us on the materials traditionally used for tinder.
