I'm in the market for an 8 pound splitting maul that won't break the bank.
Was looking at the Seymour SM-8FG on Amazon.

Any opinions?

I would recommend a Fiskars X-27 over any other wood splitter under $100. So far mine has been amazing on everything here in western Washington...

You know, I was looking at that as well. How well does it do on busting up larger logs?

Last weekend I was using it on some +/- 36" diameter fir rounds. As long as you do't try to go thru the knots it's amazing... Here is a pic for some size reference to what I'm talking about...

There is a Becker 16 in the middle of the photo for size comparison...

I've heard a lot of good things about the Fiskars and it does weigh over 6lbs. so it should work good on straight grain wood. The only issue I have with them is the fiberglass handle, I only ever owned one with a fiberglass handle and once it came loose all it was good for was a boat anchor. I've split about 100 cords/year the past few years and I've used 2older wood handled mauls, the nice thing with wood is that they can be replaced pretty quick and your right back splitting.

Wow that's about 2 cord a week give or take? I usually only bring in about 6 cord a summer so at that rate the Fiskars should last me quite a few years and for the price vs ease of use I'd buy another with no hesitation... If ya look at the popular websites on the net they can be found for about $50...

Forgot the brand of mine, just went to a local hardware store and got one with a solid fiberglass handle, I think it was $50 or $60 bucks, picked it up probably 8 years ago.

I started splitting wood at an early age, and only recall me "breaking" a maul and a sledge once, both times the head just flew off the handle, and the maul that happened on, it was well used by the time I started using it as a kid.

I usually split 10-15 rick of wood a year, and with that low numbers of broken mauls/sledges, I figured I get my money's worth. Wedges on the other hand......

I usually don't cut in the summer, I hate working on wood when it's hot out and figuring a few weeks in winter when I can't get in because of snow, it works out to 3-4 cords/week when I'm cutting.I did get hooked up with a neighbor in the past year that has an outdoor stove that doesn't need it split as small, between her and one other customer with an outdoor stove they burn about 25 cords so that has cut my splitting down some. I do think those Fiskars do look like a good quality tool and I'd give them serious consideration if I were in the market for one.

Thanks everyone for their input. I haven't made a purchase yet, but I'm thinking about getting the X-27.

However, still think i'll get a splitting maul as well!
