Ok, this story was born in the CS section and might still belong there. New elements have been added that make is less contained to that category tho. I will trust the wisdom of our moderators - if it needs moved, do ya thing!

Ok, I had the wonky Drop Forged Boot Knife. I took some pix, before boxing it back up. Once I am smarter, I will post them. Point is - I called GSM. I painted my face blue and was ready to go all William Wallace on the corporate over lords, due to the horror stories I heard about ONE SCREW being too much to ask for. Well... a very polite young lady takes my call. She was sweeter than anything. You could tell she had to deal with a product line MUCH larger than Cold Steel knives because she was unfamiliar with the model and took a long time to locate it. To be honest, we were on the phone for about 20ish minutes and it seemed like something that could have been done in 5. It didn't matter tho, she was pleasant, helpful, and committed to resolving my issue. She did have me take a screen shot of my email order confirmation to show I DID buy the knife directly from them. Then... emailed me a FedEx label and warned me it can take up to 21 days for the refund to post. So.... the call moved slow, the refund will move slow BUT they 100% told me - of course you can send it back. This is my 1st "return" experience, AFTER the buy out, and it was fantastic (didn't hurt that she sounded pretty cute).

Now, for the "bad times". I have already received multiple "blade kisses" from my new Recon 1. I've always looked at this as like how a puppy chews on your hand. It's just love and a knife is only truly yours once it knows your taste. The problem is how freakin strong the Triad Lock is. I'm used to "cross bars", "ball cages", "compressions" the kind of stuff where you can close it as easily as open it. So, a few band aids on a few tips but nothing worth worrying about. THEN.... I am getting ready to do a video comparing the differences between several popular folders. One thing I want to point out is that the Manix 2 XL is covered in jimping. I was going to show that the Recon 1 achieves the same result with the shape of its guard. That the deep finger groove does NOT allow you to slide you hand down the blade on thrusts into hard targets. So, I grab the blade (by the spine) with my left, wrap my right around the grip and shove my hand forward HARD. My right index finger hops right over the guard, I instinctively TIGHTEN my grip and slide about and inch down the blade before the message to "STOP" made it from my brain to my hand. While I can not speak for anyone else's Recon 1, mine is possibly the sharpest factory folder I have ever owned. The cut was so deep, I was actually concerned I made it through the muscle and would need surgery. Fortunately, that was not the case and they closed it up with 8 stitches.

The Recon 1 is a great folder buuuut, cleaned, oiled, boxed back up and put on a shelf. This knife and I just do not hit it off.

Oh well sorry for the marathon post. Just thought y'all might wanna hear how GSM customer service was AND how easy it is to totally skrue da pooch. Maybe yer having a bad day and I just made yours sound a little nicer 👍

Thanks for sharing. I hope your injury heals fast. Please post a video of you taking out your stitches with your Scottish broadsword.

Spring on my Code 4 was really strong, and I wasn't used Cold Steel backlocks. As I go to unlock it I grab the spine with my right hand and squeeze the lock with my left. My grip slips and the blade rotates into my ring finger. Must have hit a blood vessel cos I bled like a mf, had to fashion a tourniquet to make the bleeding stop. Lesson was learned, don't be stupid around knives 🤣

Most of the old school Cold Steel designs are very ergonomic and safe to use , if you know how .

They are not idiot proof or forgiving . Respect them or be cut !

I recommend anyone wanting to experiment , play , fool around , or train / practice, with live blades , should first either dull the edge or cover it somehow with tape etc . Cut resistant gloves might also help .

Had to re-read the OP to grasp that the first paragraph was simply about returning a Drop Forged Boot Knife.
So no problem with that knife, just didn't like it?
But it's interesting to hear of the GSM C/S experience.

As for the Recon One with the Triad Lock I sold mine before I ever even carried or used it. The lock was simply too hard for me to deal with.
I recognize it is one of, if not the strongst lock out there. But a bit too strong for me.

Takes some getting used to, has to be FULLY pressed down before the blade can be retracted, otherwise it won't budge. I swapped springs with a friend's Code 4, and his was visibly thinner (newer production), carried it for a couple more months before I sold it, the handle was just too thin for me and I wear a medium size glove. I got a Recon which is my go-to camping knife, I know I can lend it to my non-knife enthusiast friends and there's very little they can do to harm it or themselves. Since they switched to Flat grind I can't really recommend them, for me the Recon peaked when it was in XHP. Fell in love with that steel thanks to Cold Steel, and their hollow grinds were really good.

Oh, no, there was definitely something "wrong" with it. It was so asymmetrical that ya kinda start to lean to one side if ya stared at it too long :D

I wasn't looking for perfection (out of a 50ish dollar knife), I was looking for more than that tho. HOWEVER, the service rep did not demand and explanation. The simple fact that I was unhappy with the product was enough. So far, so good on GSM 👍

Finger is healing fast. Throttle time is actually helping - slight grip and turn on the throttle, extend to catch the front brake, apply a little force. Riding is giving it just the right "break in" (I have to be capable of operating firewr.s by Monday or my job gets a little weird)

So, with my finger healing up... I should be able to get some pix up - pix of the wonky boot AND pix of the slice (if cut pix are allowed?)
