Hey folks,

I'm noticing that the ends of my 1000 grit stones are starting to look bare as if just the smooth metal is showing underneath.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Thank you in advance!

It is kind of hard to tell from the pictures as usually you can see the shine of the stainless/nickle where the diamonds are gone. Doesn't happen very often, but it does happen so if the diamonds are flaking off Wicked Edge will replace them no problem - just give them a call. they did just hire an additional person to help with emails so you can email, but if you don't hear back in a day or two - call.

Do you store those two stones so they face each other? If so, it might be that they're rubbing the diamonds off each other.

You know, that ACTUALLY looks a lot like contamination from the sides of the jaws... Have you been using those a lot at minimum angles? Take a look at the base of your vise, and see if the coating is ground off. If it is, that's probably aluminum on the plates. That would just be a VERY odd spot for the diamonds to wear off, the ends tend to be the LEAST used bits of the plates.

I 2nd this... I think I would try cleaning that area with a toothbrush and some cleanser, and see if that black comes off. That would be a tough spot to rub the diamonds off during sharpening.
