I stumbled upon a buy it now on ebay last week for what was listed as a "8401" Heritage factory second knife. Bought it on the spot for $31 and got it yesterday in the mail. Now even though this thing is a second with two X stamps over the writing on the blade and even though it has no shield on the bone handles I must say, "good Lord this is a great knife!"

Honestly I have firsts that are not as nice as this folder and not just from Schrade! What I think made this one a second is the grind on the main blade. Its not even and starts in different places on each side. Its not off by a lot but enough. Otherwise its a super knife and a great user as is. I kind of like the brown bone handles without a shield and I love the fact that one of the three blades is my favorite sheeps foot shape. I like the Case Split Back Whittler 6308 but it doesn't have that sheeps foot blade I like so I can't say its going to see much use since getting this baby!

The 8041 shows up on ebay often. Sometimes the Schrade-Walden version and sometimes the Schrade Cutlery Co. Collect all 3 !
But it's not a "Split Spring Whittler". Those have not been made for over 100 years. Cutler would forge the spring, then split it for about 1/2 the length, and forge again to get exactly the right shape and dimensions. Then temper it 'just right'. That's a "split spring".
I don't think there is a name for "2 springs, tapered or with a partial dividing liner" other than "Whittler".

Split back whittler is what they are referred as. Split spring somehow managed to come out of my head to my fingers though but split back is what I meant to write and should have written. I've ordered these style of folders on more than one occasion from makers and seen them listed for sale by them and dealers as split back whittlers so apparently enough people know what you mean enough to fill the order when asked for one. ;)

They are also referred to as "true" whittlers, or wedged-spring. They are nice knives. Schrade (763) and Camillus (72) (and other companies) also made a nice little 3 9/16" swell center or humpback 3 blade knife that are always called whittlers, but they are not, really, in the strict sense of the term.

I was not trying to be a 'smart ass' with my correction of terminology. Even among knowledgeable 'knifers', the names and terms are used to mean different things. A commonly accepted terminology would help decrease confusion. Bernard Levine in this "Guide to Knives ---" 4th ed. lays out authoratative definitions based on each pattern's history and i believe this is the most logical, clear and specific system to date and is what i try to apply.
