I have looked on this site for info on the 806d2 and found some things. I am thinking of getting this knife with the up coming birthday money and want to know what you guys think of D2. My main concern is of it getting stained or corroded. My main interaction has been with ATS-34 or 154cm. I like both of them greatly, but the 806 comes in D2 and want to know if it is worth the purchase. I take care of my knives, and do not abuse them by any stretch of the imagination, but if it requires constant attention due to sweat, water, or whatever I don't know if want to make the plunge. Thanks for your time.

I think D2 is actually semi stainless, IIRC. Anyway, had mine a year or so with no rust whatsoever.

Get it.

you needn't be worried about the stain resistance, D2 is pretty 'Stainless' and the 806D2 it coated in BT2 (a teflon coating) which even continues to protect the steel when it's scratched (which it will be if you use it).

It's a GREAT knife and my main EDC blade.

I LOVE mine. If you don't like it you'll have no problem re-selling it or trading for something else.

Good luck,

-John

I was knew the stain resisting would be greater with the coating, but wanted to be sure with the sharpened edge. Yeah the blade will get scratched, but I do not forsee a gouge coming in to play here. Thanks for those that replied.

This is my favorite folder of all time. With the right technique it's faster from hand-on-belly to being open in front of you than an auto or even an Emerson with a Wave. (Write me if you buy one and I'll tell you how.)

D2 does rust. I have a D2 Limited Edition Benchmade Outbounder with POLISHED D2 blade that did get some specs of rust pretty darn easily. That shouldn't be a problem with your coated knife. I haven't seen rust on the uncoated edge of mine yet and I've carried and used it a lot.

The edge on a D2 knife is an absolute JOY! Just a LITTLE harder to sharpen and it keeps a GREAT edge. ESPECIALLY if you use a strop to maintain your edge. I've carried mine off and on for a year cutting boxes and have stropped it every week I use it and it's still hair-poppin' sharp just from servicing it with a loaded leather strop.

I'm consistantly able to get any D2 knife sharper than any other. I simply love this steel. I love this steel and knife combination. It'll spoil you for sure!

I wouldn't worry about rust, I've carried my 710HS (M2 rusts much easier than D2) in some very wet environments and given it no special care. The only rust I've seen was a little orange color in the butterfly logo. That was after being in my soaking wet jeans for 12 hours, and being taken out and set in my desk drawer overnight with not even a wipedown.

Zero problems with rust. I've gone into a pool with it clipped IWB, and just dried it out afterwards plus a little WD-40.

It seems rust resistant enough that I've gotten rust on the liners where there has been none on the blade under the same conditions.

Hi!
I've used an AFCK for almost 8 years now my first was a model with ATS34 and liner lock systeme. It worked fine and I used every single day in my job as Group leader in the army.
When the D2 version apeared with Axis lock I buyed it right away, and believe me my friend, it work even better!
The D2 is very great to resharpen and hold the edge very fine, the axis lock systeme is a pure joy to use and the new ovale hole make it much easier to open.
I wear it IWB in all conditions and never experienced any kind of rust problems. One of my friend use his own as diver knife too!
Believe me if u're searching for a great folder that won't let you down, go for this one!

Of all of my complaints about the 806D2, which is my current LH EDC for now, rust has never been one.

You will be very happy with this knife! It's my favorite folder. I don't think there is a better EDC folder IMO.

Go for it! D2 is "almost-stainless" and can be maintained very easily. The AFCK is a great knife.

Get it!

Benchmade has an eye for rust resistance and uses a heat treatment to get the best out of the steel for this. I asked them, they told me.

Don´t worry. There are people using it near the sea.

I take it while jogging. Ok after that i keep it clean and dry and use a drop of oil, but thats what i would do with every knife.

If it comes on 52100 steel, you are right to worry. And every knife should be kept clean after using.

O.K. i don´t know, what you mean with easily, but if we use it the same way, it shouldn´t happen. Maybe ask around for someone to get the finish better.

I use a D2 uncoated, which is tempered a way, that it is less rust resistant than normaly tempered D2 and it only gets some black spots after getting i contact with sour elements and no cleaned after that.
No spots of rust!

I have also had no problems with it rusting. The place I would be worried about it rusting would be at the pivot point where it is not coated, but I guess there is usually oil there that does not get rubbed off, and I have not had any problems at all.

If you mean me, then no, I have not dissasembled the knife. The uncoated parts I can see are not rusted or corroded in any way.
