well i liked my BM 710 so much, friday i went and got a AFCK axis, a pre production model - it is one of the sharpest knives i have gotten from the factory, most need a little touch up, but not this one! looks very very much like a std liner AFCK, except tip up and a little heavier than a liner version.....

i have 3 std AFCK's, a 800S, a 800BT, and a M2HSS, so i obviously like the AFCK design - i REALLY like this new axis AFCK, it rocks - ya cant appreciate the superior handling characteristics of the axis until ya handle one imho - the only thing i miss is the butterfly logos, and tip down carry, not really a big deal though - BUT i liked the butterflies!!

yes, the axis rocks.....

now i want that 710 prototype next..........

and no, i dont think it will release accidently, not easily anyway, a supposed 'defect' mentioned earlier when they first came out, i guess it COULD happen, but the sun might come up in the north tomorrow too lol, but i dont think i will be around to see it

Good choice, the 806SD2 is a excellent addition to the Axis lock line up. Now if Benchmade will come out with a plain edged satin blade version, it will be perfect.I would have been very tempted to buy the 710 prototype before the AFCK though!

I recently bought one of the new Axis AFCKs myself. While I like the Axis mechanism, I have to say that overall I still prefer my Rekat Carnivour and Emerson Mini Commander. The reason is that I feel these two knives have better grips than the Benchmade AFCK. Both the Rekat knife and Emerson have a rougher, grippier feel to the scales, and better shapes to the handle. Of course, the rolling lock on the Rekat is awfully stiff and gritty in comparison to the Benchmade Axis lock, but that grip is very important to me.

Hey, while we're on the topic, a few questions about the Axis AFCK:

What are the differences between the Axis AFCK in D2 and my old, trusted AFCK M2HSS? Would I be correct in stating that the differences are limited to...

1. It uses D2 in place of M2 steel (duh)
2. It has the axis lock instead of the liner lock (double duh)
3. No more butterfly logo

...and everything else is the same? Blade shape, grind, grip ergonomics are all identical? Also, what is the pratical difference in performance between the D2 and M2 steels? I know that the D2 is much more rust resistant (which is a major plus). Finally, is the Benchmade Black Blade Stuff any more wear resistance than the old stuff? The crap on my AFCK M2 comes off the blade pretty easily.

Thanks,
Mike

Yup. For the most part. The 806 handle is a smidgen wider and thicker, not enough to make any difference.

Yup. 806 has the oval hole of course.

No it isn't. D-2 is a little more corrosion resistant, only a little. M-2 is really not a maintenance issue with BT2 coating on it. Just keep standing water off the edge. Rinse in fresh water and dry after use in salt water. I really can't tell the difference between Benchmade D-2 and 154CM so far.

Finally, is the Benchmade Black Blade Stuff any more wear resistance than the old stuff?

No. It is the same old stuff. (BT2)

Thats true, but BM is supposedly releasing new 806s with holes for either tip up or tip down.

Yes, I recently browsed through the Benchmade Dealer's catalog at a local B & M shop. The picture and text say the Axis TSEK & AFCK have the option of tip down or up carry. But I don't think the part number changed, so it will be hard to tell what you're getting when you order.

Does anyone know where I can find one of these newer models?

Thanks.

imho it will be intersting to see were BM puts the clip for tip down carry, it is possible i'm sure, but it is gonna be tight w/out a specially designed clip imho - was looking at them earlier tonite and wondering how to do it (comparing a 800S ot the new one) i wanna see a pic when they do ........

the main diff as i can see 'tween the 800 and the new axis lock AFCK's is that the 806's are a little heavier, dont have a scale, so cant say for sure how much, but ya can feel it in your hand when comparing the 2 - aint that much though - look the same thickness to me, aint much diff for sure

again i really like them, though my old M2HSS takes a heckuva an edge we will have to see the diff 'tween the D2/M2, all my AFCK's are diff steels, 1 ATS34, 1 M2, 1 D2, 1 154 CM, so will be intersting to compatre edge retention/corrosion resistance/etc

again, the axis AFCK is the bomb imho

one really cool thing is ya can manipulate the lock w/your finger and boom flick it out, and then boom flick it in, on ANY axis - ALMOST like an auto imho, certainly 1 hand ops for sure - really handy, had a REKAT and got used to doing the lock like this, can do it fast now......

and yes i do miss the butterflys lol, and , hopefully, the 710 proto will be mine ASAP - was a hard decision for sure, but hope the thing doesnt sell till i have the $$ next month.....

There are some pics on the BM forum of the "swiss cheese" 806. Might want to check it out.

I like the Axis AFCK, but can't get past the BT2 :barf:

I would like to see a picture of the knife with the clip set up for tip down. As stated above there isn't much room there for a clip.

Same here Dennis.., I just don't like the coated blades.., but I do intend to BEG for BM to rub a D2 blade out for me :)...fingers crossed!

According to Benchmade's website and catalog the Axis AFCK has a blade that is .06" longer... I know it's a small difference but hey, you asked.
