80crv2 and 15n20?

Isn't 80crv2 sometimes compared to 5160 (on steroids) but with a higher carbon content, .80% I'm guessing? Also compared to 1080+ I think.. I could just look it up but whats the fun in that ;) .. At least I believe have heard such comparisons.

Alpha Knife Supply sells it as 1080+. It is indeed pretty much the same, just with a bit of added chromium and vanadium and less manganese.
Here's Aldo's specs for it: Carbon 0.807 Silicon 0.32 Manganese 0.54 Phosphorus 0.010 Sulfur 0.003 Chromium 0.503 Vanadium 0.153

Should work fine, but I've not tried it.

Thanks Salem!

You probably wouldn't get a great contrast. It would make a subtle pattern. For certain applications, that would be good.

I've been doing some 15n20 / 80CrV2 / O2 damascus. The 80CrV2 etches kind of grey while the O2 etches quite a bit darker. This 3-steel combo can actually make a pretty neat 3-D effect.

Performance-wise I think you'll be happy with the combination. If you want more contrast you can always etch a little deeper or cold-blue it afterwards.
