I've looked around but cant seem to find numbers I should be looking for for 80crv2 as quenched before tempering.
I'm seeing 63-64 with an 11 sec. oil heated to 120. Does this seem low? I just started playing with the med speed oil so I'm looking to get dialed in right.

Ok thanks. I've heard it called a steel with low hardenability, but wasn't sure what to expect.
I usually do hardness testing after tempering but now that I have 2 different quench oils I'm trying to figure what works best with what.

My understand is that at 120F you have 13 second oil, at least in the case of the Houghton/Brownells stuff. Same deal at the top of the range at 180F. It becomes 11 second oil at the "sweet spot" of 150F.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered a bucket heater. I was heating rr spikes and my temp probably dropped some by the time I quenched the blade.
Still hit rc60 after a 400 temper, which was what I was shooting for so it worked out.
