1) Get Job
2) Make money
3) Buy Esee that comes with great sheath
4) Resulting knife and sheath satisfaction
4) Drink milk then recycle jug

:p

If this is really what I think it is, and I'm pretty sure it is, then this is really funny, especially seeing how it seems it's trifectant now.

i don't want to waste real kydex learning how to shape and make stuff with it

Shotgunner would probably be willing to admit that even HE destroyed some kydex the first several times.

Practicing with milk jugs isn't the same. I've screwed up plenty of kydex. It is a masters art, I'm doing something wrong.

I would recommend trying toilet paper, be forewarned though, learning how to shape kydex by practising with toilet paper might be like learning how to swim by practising with styrofoam peanuts....

I give up, it went from being confusing, to milk jugs, to being drunk and now on to horse antibiotics.

I was some what considering the idea of getting all the stuff to do my own kydex... this is not very encouraging. My money may be better spent by paying someone who knows what they are doing!

EBR,

I might suggest that you can do with sandpaper (slower) just about anyting you can do with a mechanical sander.

Unless you will be doing a lot of projects, skip the press and get a camping sleep pad from Walmart and sandwich it between plywood. Just weight it down or clamp the top and bottom together. That will save you at least half of your cost.

I use a couple scraps of 1x6 pine, some blue sleeping mat from wally world and a hand towel.
my kydex came from a salvage place, I already had a cheap belt sander, and I cut the stuff with sheet metal shears.
2 part leather rivets will hold it together if you don't want to order 1/4" grommets from a knife supply store.

for practice, use 5 gallon buckets - they shape at a lower temp than kydex, but are good for making patterns.

Take a look at the knife makers forum on the idea of making money off of this stuff. I think it's in one of the stickies. You want money, be prepared to invest in tools. Otherwise, expect (even when vastly overcharging) to get paid less than minimum wage per hour of labor you expend. And also expect people not to buy vastly overpriced items. When you do purchase all the stuff and learn to use it well... I don't know how much time it'll take you to break even on your expenses (initial investment in tools, cost of training (time and matterials) and production costs.) Maybe Shotgunner can drop in and throw a word or two of wisdom at you as someone who has done this. But be prepared for a long expensive haul and hours upon hours of commitment before you even get anywhere. (Such is my assessment.) Also, what kind of repertoire of knives do you have? I'm more likely to buy a custom sheath when I am not sending you my own blade.

God bless,
Adam
