83mm Manix versus Ritter Grip for camp / survival

I'm going on a week-long camping trip in the Appalachians next week. I only want to bring one knife, and I'm debating between bringing my 83mm Manix or my Ritter Grip, which I just got recently. I'll be using it for all camp related chores, and I've never used either knife for an extended period of time.

Just from handling the two, I'm leaning toward the Manix. The Manix G10 feels less abrasive than the FRN on the Ritter Grip, though the Ritter does have the axis lock, which may be easier to clean.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Stories of practical experience would be helpful (I've already read Cliff's reviews of both knives, which are helpful in and of themselves).

Wouldn't this be a great op to do a side by side comparison of both?

Which ever one you select, please send us a review when you get back!

I would take the Ritter, wasn't that what it was designed for? Why not take both?

I'm going to take both and do a comparison. Will post my opinions when I get back.

The exact right conclusion!

Personally, I've come to dislike bellies unless I"m doing something that I know will specifically require one, so I'd lean towards the Manix. But you'll probably find both are great.

I agree with Mr.Talmadge. Big bellies are more task specific. I would most likely grab the Manix, but I must admit that it would be a difficult decision. I am most anxious to see the results of bk400's comparison.

Looking forward to them (although my money's on the Manix)! Thanks a bunch in advance!

Both would be my choice- but then again my survival kit/ hip sack has no fewer than 3 knives- plus a multi-tool on my belt at least! I would rather have no fire making supplies than no knife!

Anyone who has spent a lot of time in the backcountry knows that making a fire is critically essential to surviving, especially in the winter and cold months.

I'd opt for only one knife and some waterproof matches and some vaseline soacked cotton balls in sealed camera film cases than three knives and a multi-tool. Too much weight you're carrying!

If you are in one spot and not doing lots of hiking take the whole bunch. Heck you'll probably drive to the campsite. I would take a large 8" chef type knife for camp cooking. It is much more practical than any folder. If I were hiking alot I'd take whichever was the lightest. I have a Spyderco Moran fixed blade FB01 model that is very light and easy to carry when hunting.

I agree with DGG. If you can manage, bring a good fixed when you go camping. Spyderco Moran is a good choice. I do have one and am waiting for a second one. Moran's good for kitchen choir.
