84 mm Vic

I favor the tinker. I like having the longer shank t-handle phillips, I've actually fixed thinkgs with it.

The Tinker is a trusty longtime companion. I also like the Waiter. And I'm fond of a My First Victorinox with the blade ground into a sheepsfoot.

The first Victorinox I ever owned was a recruit,I bought it because I wanted to know how good Vic's were before I spent money on the models I realy liked.I steal have it,along with a couple others;)

The recruit is my choice in 84mm Vics for it's usefullness and simplicity.

Ok, so maybe this is gloating, but I just received this unique 84mm SAK today from FelineVet. It's like an 84mm Climber (yes, they did make them, but they're discontinued) but it has a Sportsman-style nail file in place of the small blade.

The SAK Selector calls it a "Super Sportsman" but admits that that is just a made up name, and that the official Vic name is not known.

If you want truly unique SAKs, you've gotta check FelineVet's offerings on a regular basis, over on sosakonline.com

Incidentally, Wenger makes a nice 85mm called a Traveller that is like this 84mm Vic knife. I haven't ever handled one, but it looks nice and it's still in production so it's affordable and easy to find. I would have settled for one of those pretty soon if I hadn't found this Vic alternative. I prefer Vics over Wengers but I have been really, REALLY wanting to try EDCing an 84 or 85mm in this configuration.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the Huntsman yet. I've had mine since 1982 or so (got it when I was twelve). It was my only knife for many years and shows a lot of wear, but it is still totally functional. I plan to pass it on to my daughter when she's old enough.

Recruit all the way. I love this little guy. Kind've like a jack knife, but with a bottle and can opener. I love looking at the back and seeing nothing but springs. I'm a fan of traditional slipjoints, and this kind've makes me feel like I'm holding one of those. I have other slippies. Peanuts, Sodbusters, stockman, but the quality of a SAK speaks for itself. Best knife for the buck. Saks rule, and the Recruit rules in thye 84mm range. Just the tools I need, nothing more.

That's a nice catch!

Do you have an 84mm Huntsman? THAT would be a nice, scarce SAK!

The Huntsman is larger (3 1/2 inches or 91 mm), I believe, though I sure wish I had better references or sources aside from my anecdotal knowledge.

This has got me wondering if 84 mm models are at most 2 layers. Do they ever reach 3 or 4 layers like the Huntsman? (not to change the thread)

I have had 84mm Huntsman (Huntsmen?) many 84mm Climbers, and a couple of 84mm Fieldmasters.

Favorite 84mm is a tough call; either a Sportsman or an Alox Bantam I guess. I have 5 or 6 84mms that I rotate through depending on what big SAK and lockblade folder that I am carrying for the day.

I have been carrying a Wenger 85mm Highlander a lot lately (basically a Sportsman with a phillips instead of a corkscrew) and really like it. I also have a Traveller that I keep in my shaving kit.

tcolling you are giving me scissor envy!lol!

My first SAK was an 84mm recruit received as a gift over 20 years ago. Great little knife, its the one above all my knives thats seen the most "pocket time".

Lately i've also come to love one of the cheapest (inexpensive) 84mms, the waiter. One layer that does the job of some 2 layer saks.

When i find a 84mm with scissors i will custom mod my dream 84mm, basically a 3 layer Huntsman. Basically all the tools of a huntsman, minus the canopener and bottle opener layer, minus the small blade to be replaced by the canopener/bottleopener combo blade.
And i preordered a couple of those special run alox lumberjacks from SwissBianco. I can't wait to get my hands on those!
Right now 84mm and 111mm are my favorite SAK frame sizes!

Silly question...but is my Cadet (I am at work so I cannot measure it) an 84mm? It certainly is a sweet little knife.

The Recruit is a sweetie too. Ah, hell...I love them all...

Hmm. I would love a Recruit with scissors instead of the smaller blade.

I don't own a cadet but i think they are 84mm. I was recently looking to buy an alox Cadet II which i know is definitely 84mm.
:)

I think so - it's smaller than the current version and lacks the package hook.
Waaaaay too used to be a collector's item though (but still perfectly funtional).
