84mm Waiter "Plus"?

I don't know a lot about the more arcane details of SAKs, but from reading this forum I formed the impression that:

1) the "Plus" designation on some models means that they have the ballpoint pen and the straight pin in the scales, and

2) the only "Plus" models are 91mm.

However, I may have got this wrong (loud gasps and cries of "No!", "Impossible!"). I just bought a new Vic Waiter (my first 84mm) and noticed that it has the hole for the pin beside the corkscrew pivot. No pin, just the hole, and no ballpoint or hole for one.

It seems unlikely that Vic would make a scale with the hole unless they intended to use it for something, and just adding a pin seems trivial. A ballpoint would be nice to have. Can anyone tell me if there are 84mm "Plus" models, or have they had the pin hole all along?

I have a few new style regular scaled 91mms and they all have the straight pin hole. So, technically the only thing extra the plus scales offer now is the ink pen. I havn't seen the pin hole on the 84s yet though, maybe Vic decided to incorporate the pin hole into the 84mm line now?

The "PLUS" package includes the mini-screwdriver for the corkscrew as well as the ballpoint and straight pin. There are currently no Plus scales for the 84mm. and I haven't heard that there will be but the pin hole might be a hint for the future. BTW, if you want to add a straight pin yourself, get the larger "Tailor" pins as the regular pins are too small. You can buy a couple of hundred for less that $2. and give the rest to your wife for sewing box.

Good point, Felinevet, I neglected to mention the mini screwdriver, but I bought one at the same time as the knife. I added a pin, too, so now I have a 2/3 Plus 84mm Waiter. :) The first pin I pulled out of the sewing box fit fine, although it's a bit shorter than the "official" ones.

Maybe it's just my particular sample, but are the new knives coming with stronger springs? The blades on mine have a very positive snap.

The mini screwdriver has changed, too. The tip no longer has a simple bevel on each side, but is ground so that the sides of the tip are closer to parallel (think hollow-ground rather than flat-ground).

I have also noticed different versions of the jeweller's mini-screwdriver -

left to right - from 2005 Champion Plus, 2004(?) Custom Camper (retro fitted), 1989 Scientist.

Notice the "Pat" on the newer ones and the difference in the leftmost in its non-tapered screwdriver tip.

A picture is worth a thousand words (1100CDN). Thanks for posting that, Vincent. The left screwdriver is indeed the style I bought.
