Anyone used this stuff? I'm looking for a steel to pair with 1095 for a higher contrast San Mai. This is a little thicker than the 15n20 I've been using and wanted to give it a shot. Will it weld easy? Does anyone know if it comes annealed? Thanks.

It will give you lower contrast, it does etch (a opposed to the L6 which is etch resistant which is why it stays shiny). Admiral sold me a bunch of it when I ordered 15N20, I found out when the order arrived that what they had given me when I ordered 15N20 on the phone was the 8670M, when I called them to ask what they had sent me instead of what I had ordered they said it was just like 15N20 (it is not) the 1070-1080 they sent in place of the 1084 they said they were sending me was less than optimal. I did make damascus out of them and wondered why I was having such a hard time getting decent contrast. BTW if you got your 1095 from Admiral check it for banding (grind through the heavy layer of scale, take a spot down to 400 grit and look for little black lines) I still have the bar of crap 1095 I bought from Admiral 7 years ago that was almost unusable.

I will never order blade steel from Admiral again, everything I got from them was crap, and their customer service didn't want to talk to me since I was not buying steel by the 100 ton boxcar load.

Get the correct steel from Aldo (www.njsteelbaron.com) and you will be much happier

Wow I haven't heard that about Admiral before. This would have been my first order from them. I've ordered 1084 from Aldo and get my 1095 from Kelly Cupples and Ray Kirk. I like the idea of ordering from the small business guys anyway. I'll email Aldo thanks.

Use Aldo; nuff said. Admiral has a bad habit of sending the wrong steels, and often warped stuff, too. Aldo rocks the house! :)

All three of them sell 15N20. I get mine from Kelly sheared to size, good clean stuff. I traded W2 for a bunch with Ray Kirk also. I got all my 1084 from Aldo. When I want thicker 15N20, I just double it up.

I used to get a bunch of 1084 (when they had it) and 1080 from Admiral, never had a problem at all, but I always asked for Terry Summers.

Thanks guys. I have a bunch of 15n20 that I will use. I've bought some from Ray Kirk and Kelly Cupples, both guys are awesome. I was just after some thicker stock. I see now that Aldo has some thick L6 I may try someday. I actually found a wrought chain link I forgot I had. I'm going to flatten some out this week and give it a shot. I think I may put a thinner piece of 15n20 on each side of the core then wrought. I've never welded wrought so we'll see how it turns out. Thanks guys for the help.
